CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina sophomore wrestlers Zac Bennett and Corey Mock earned preseason top 20 rankings according to InterMat Wrestling. Bennett will begin the season ranked No. 17 at 197 pounds, while Mock earned the No. 15 ranking among 157 pounders. The season opener for the Tar Heels will be Nov. 6 at the Hokie Open in Blacksburg, Va.
Both Bennett and Mock earned a trip to the NCAA Championships as they qualified through their finishes at the ACC Championships. Bennett claimed the ACC title at 197 pounds to earn his spot, while Mock placed third at 157 pounds.
After redshirting his first year on campus, Bennett stepped into the starting role at 197 pounds and never looked back en route to a 28-13 overall record. Bennett recorded 12 pins on the year to lead the Tar Heels and rank among the top 10 in school single season history.
Mock turned in one of the finest freshman campaigns in school history as he tied for 12th in school single season history with 36 wins. The 36 victories is the most-ever by a Tar Heel true freshman and one behind the freshman record of 37 held by Vincent Ramirez in 2005-06.
