Three major tournaments upcoming

Postby JM » Sun Jan 22, 2017 7:48 pm

The folks scheduling international Freestyle tournaments didn't do a very good job of talking to each other apparently as three major tournaments are on the books for the next two weekends.

1. The Ivan Yariguin In Krasnoyarsk, Russia on 27-29 January. Most prestigious. Kyle Snyder planning on being there.

2. The Paris International in France on 27-29 January. Kyle Dake and Zach Rey planning to compete.

3. The Dave Schultz Memorial in Colorado Springs on Jan 31-Feb 3. Stay tuned.

Have to laud Young Mr. Snyder in attending this buzzsaw of a tournament during the college season... that what doesn't kill him, makes Kyle Snyder stronger! :o

Does anyone else wonder how the talented Mr. Snyder fulfills his 'student ' part of being enrolled at Ohio State with his college and international wrestling schedule. I understand he left for Russia earlier today to prepare for the tournament.

Other USA Freestyle wrestlers entering the Yariguin tournament are Cody Brewer at 61 kg and Gwiz at 125 kg.

Trivia question - who was the most recent USA wrestler to win a gold medal at Yariguin ?

Day 2 in Paris - Kyle Dake scores early and often in all his matches to easily win the tourney at 74kg. He wins by technical fall, 10-0 in under 4 minutes over former Ok State star Alex Dieringer. Dake looked awesome !!
Former PSU wrestler David Taylor wins at 84kg over USA teammate Richard Perry.
Zach Rey takes bronze at hwt. Defeats former Iowa wrestler Telford in the medal round.

Interesting to note that the coach in Daje's corner is none other than the Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club coach, Mr Buxton.

Meanwhile at the Yariguin tournament in Russia Kyle Snyder becomes the first American since Steve Mocco in 2009 to take home a gold medal. He pins his Russian opponent in the finals. Kyle was down 4-1 in period one, came back to lead 6-4, and then drove his opponent from neutral to the mat for the fall to win the tournament.

Good weekend for USA freestyle wrestlers oversees.

Snyder is incredible, still getting better.

The Russian literally gave up in the gold medal match.
