Coming off their second season of competition in the NCWA, the West Chester University wrestling team is looking to the future and continues to take big steps forward. Although it was just their second season, 2010 was an incredibly successful one that saw the WCU team soar to new heights. A strong 4th place finish at the 2010 NCWA National Duals was highlighted by the Golden Rams knocking off three-time defending national dual champion Grand Valley State. At the 2010 NCWA National Championships, West Chester showed that they are indeed a legitimate national power by coming away with four All-Americans on the way to a 6th place team finish in what was the strongest field in NCWA history. WCU crowned TWO NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, along with a runner-up and a 6th place finisher. The Golden Ram coaching staff of Joe Miller, Alray Johnson and Bruce Colley also earned well deserved accolades, in receiving the NCWA “NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR” award!
The WCU wrestling team continues to grow quickly, and thanks to the endless efforts of the many WCU wrestling alumni across the country, great things are sure to be on the horizon. This tremendous support was on display in July, as WCU hosted the first “Brute Wrestling Camp”. This endeavor was headed by Jeff Bowyer and WCU wrestling alums John Purnell, John Licata and Mike Moyer, who rallied former WCU wrestlers and many other prominent members of the national wrestling community to accomplish four important goals: 1) get kids on campus and demonstrate to the school community that wrestling is viable at WCU; 2) give back to the Philadelphia metro wrestling community; 3) give parents, coaches and wrestlers the opportunity to be exposed to some of the best wrestling people in the country: and 4) raise funds for the West Chester University wrestling team. These objectives were all met, as the camp provided instruction for over 430 wrestlers. Clinicians and contributors during the week included: Jeff Bowyer, John Gallagher, Dave Miller, Roger Sanders, Joe Miller, Mike Moyer, Mike Grimes, Bill Rasich, Anthony Stagliano, Paul Graham, Dale Bonsall, Rick Bonomo, Dan Mayo, John Purnell, Scott Griscom and Ed Bailey. With the effort and support of West Chester University President, Greg R. Weisenstein and WCU School of Health Sciences Dean, Dr. Don Barr, the event was a huge success.
The 2011 season looks to be another good one for the Golden Rams, as most of last years team returns, including all four All-Americans. They will also be joined by a host of newcomers. The coaching staff has gotten stronger, as well, with former PA State Champion, Glenn Koser coming on board. The schedule is highlighted by home duals with Navy Prep (Dec. 10) and Army Prep (Jan. 22), the UMBC Duals in Baltimore (Dec. 11), the North-South Duals at Ursinus College (Jan. 8), the NCWA National Duals in Dalton, GA (Jan. 28-29) and the NCWA National Championships in Macon, GA (Mar. 10-12).
