BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell wrestling team (8-8) defeated the Apprentice Builders on Tuesday, Feb. 17 inside the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center by a final score of 39-9. The win allowed the Camels to surpass the seven win mark for the first time since 1997-98.

On a Senior Night full of emotion and excitement, the CU wrestlers came out full throttle as they recorded the first 24 team points of the match. After the Builders did not send a wrestler to the mat to face 125 pounder CJ Gittens, Richie Apolinar wrestled his way to a 12-7 decision over Marcus Chevres at the 133 pound weight class giving the Camels a quick 9-0 lead.

The first senior to wrestle on the evening was 141 pounder Kelin Bidelspach. Bidelspach met Tywana Holley, a product of Erwin Triton High School, and gained a 4-1 decision to give the Camels a 12-0 lead.

Matt King may have very well provided the highlight of the night for the Campbell wrestling team. A senior from St. Charles, Mo., King has fought injury for the past two seasons and was able to fight through and get the pin as time expired in the first period. He gave a very pronounced fist pump when heading back to the center of the mat that gave the crowd on hand a burst of energy.

The Camels rode that momentum the rest of the match. After a Jake Fose win by forfeit and an Apprentice victory, CU’s Ryan Ham and Parker Burns sandwiched pins around senior Kyle Higgins’ decision at 184 pounds.

The Campbell wrestlers will head to Durham, N.C. and Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on the Duke on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.
