Jordan and Horwath take first at Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Thirteen Wisconsin wrestlers competed at the Navy Classic on Saturday, as Isaac Jordan and Brock Horwath took first in their respective weight classes.

An injury kept Jordan out of the Badgers' first dual meet against UW-Whitewater and the Michigan State Open, but he returned to the mat fired up, sweeping the 165-pound bracket.

The No. 2-ranked wrestler powered through his first two matches with ease, picking up falls at 1:51 and 1:53. Jordan's third match proved to be the tightest, as he won by decision, 6-5, over the U.S. Naval Academy's Michael Coleman. He finished the day with 6-2 and 4-0 decisions to take the crown.

Horwath won, 5-0, by decision before pinning his next opponent at 1:38. He mirrored his first round match with a 5-0 decision over Ray O'Donnell of Princeton to advance to the championship. Again, Horwath won by five points—this time by a 7-2 decision—to take first at heavyweight.

Johnny Jimenez nearly matched Jordan and Horwath's performances, but came up short in the championship.

The 125-pounder had a pin and two wins by decision through three matches prior to facing off with No. 13 Paul Petrov of Bucknell in the final. Jimenez lost, 10-0, by major decision to take second.

Wisconsin's next-best competitor was Ryan Christensen, who took fourth at 184 pounds. He heartbreakingly fell to Kent State's Cole Baxter in the third-place match, losing, 2-0, in sudden victory.

Christensen's four wins were composed of two major decisions (8-0, 10-2), a 6-2 decision and a fall at 1:24.

Also participating at 184 pounds was Jake Stilling. He took sixth after losing to Christensen by major decision in the semifinal match of the consolation bracket.

Three Badgers—Luke Rowh (141), Jared Scharenbrock (157) and Seth Liegel (165)—earned fifth-place results at the Navy Classic.

Rowh had a win by fall (4:10) and major decision (14-2), while Scharenbrock earned two victories by fall (3:41, 2:45) and one by major decision (8-0). Liegel won each of his matches by decision.

Rylan Lubeck was the ninth UW wrestler to place, as he took sixth at 149 pounds. His four wins were made up of three by decision (5-3, 9-4, 6-2) and one by fall (6:01).

Andrew Crone (149), TJ Ruschell (157), Nic Veling (197) and Eric Peissig (197) also took part in the tournament, but did not place.

Wisconsin will take next weekend off for Thanksgiving before returning to the mat, Dec. 4-5, at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas.
