American Splits Final Duals of the Season

Eagles defeat George Mason, fall to Northwestern

WASHINGTON – Led by junior David Terao, the American University wrestling team split a pair of home duals on Saturday evening to wrap up its 2014-15 dual slate. The Eagles defeated local rival George Mason, 21-16, while dropping a 28-20 contest to Northwestern.

David Terao, ranked 17th in the nation at 125 pounds, got the Eagles out to a strong beginning against George Mason, scoring a 19-4 technical fall. Freshman Josh Terao followed with a 3-2 decision at 133 pounds to give American an 8-0 lead in the team scoring.

After the Patriots cut the margin to one point with wins in the next two bouts, junior captain John Boyle increased American’s lead with an 8-2 decision at 157 pounds. However, George Mason scored a tech fall at 165 to gain a 12-11 advantage.

The 174-pound bout was an 11-minute battle, extending to a second set of tiebreakers. Sophomore Jason Grimes, in his first match as a starter since dropping to 174, scored a critical reversal over Ryan Forrest in the second tiebreaker to come away with a 4-3 win.

Freshman Jeric Kasunic added a decision at 184 pounds for the Eagles, while sophomore Brett Dempsey scored a 13-5 major decision at 197 to secure AU’s team win. Meanwhile, George Mason claimed the final win of the match with a major decision in the heavyweight bout.

In the second match of the night, Northwestern was carried by its five nationally ranked wrestlers, all of whom won their bouts, including two by fall and two by technical fall.

David Terao started the action against the Wildcats, scoring his second technical fall of the evening, while Josh Terao battled a close match against 20th-ranked Dominick Malone, dropping a 5-2 decision. Northwestern won the next three contested bouts, but forfeit victories for the Eagles at 157 and 174 pounds gave AU a 17-16 edge.

Kasunic picked up a strong 5-2 decision at 184 pounds to extend the Eagles’ advantage to 20-16, but the Wildcats closed out the dual with a pair of falls to pick up the team win.

With the regular season complete, the Eagles will now prepare for the 2015 EIWA Championships, which will be hosted by Lehigh March 6-7.
