LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – On a night where top-ranked Chris Honeycutt sat out, the Edinboro wrestling team came away with a convincing 28-6 victory at Lock Haven in an Eastern Wrestling League match. The Fighting Scots, tied for tenth in the InterMat poll and 21st in the NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll, won eight of ten matches to improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the EWL. The Bald Eagles fell to 3-7 and 0-2, respectively.
It was a dominant showing by the Fighting Scots, despite Honeycutt’s absence. In fact, his replacement, senior Kenny Massey (1-2), set the tone for the night when he picked up his first win of the season and ninth of his career with a convincing 15-8 decision over Matt Parlier at 197 lbs. Massey recorded seven takedowns in the match, leading the way for an 18-3 advantage for Edinboro in takedowns for the evening.
Massey’s match was the second of the night as the dual got underway at 184 lbs. Edinboro would jump out to a 22-0 lead with wins in the first seven matches. Lock Haven would win the next two bouts at 157 and 165 lbs. against true freshmen Casey Fuller and Jesse Swink, but Chris Hrunka ended the night with the only fall in the dual, pinning Aaron McKinney at 4:12. That helped Hrunka improve to 15-12.
Freshman Vic Avery started the night with a 6-1 decision at 184 lbs. over Fred Garcia to improve to 18-10. Leading 2-0 after two periods, Avery added an escape and a takedown in the third period, and owned over two minutes in riding time.
After Massey won to give Edinboro a 6-0 lead, Ernest James won a 4-0 decision against Harry Turner at heavyweight in a rematch of the PSAC Championships finals. James dominated what was considered to be a key swing match, recording a first period takedown with 30 seconds left in the period. He rode out Turner in the second period, then escaped early in the third for a 3-0 lead. James, who won by fall over Turner at the PSAC’s, improved to 24-8 while Turner fell to 19-14.
At 125 lbs., Kory Mines registered one of his biggest wins of the year with an 11-8 decision over Bobby Rehn (23-13). The redshirt freshman trailed 6-5 entering the third period. His quick escape knotted the score at 6-6, and he would follow with two takedowns for the upset against the PSAC champion. Mines is now 13-12.
Sixth-ranked A.J. Schopp improved to 29-3 with a 12-0 major decision over John Trumbetti at 133 lbs. The 2012 PSAC champ dominated the former EWL champion, opening up a 6-0 lead with a takedown and four near-fall points. He would add three more back points in the second period and a takedown in the third. All told, Schopp had 5:22 in riding time.
Oncoming redshirt freshman Mitchell Port picked up his sixth straight win with a 6-0 decision against former NCAA qualifier Matt Bonson. Port, ranked 17th by InterMat, opened up the scoring in the second period with a reversal and later added three near-fall points. He rode out Bonson in the third period to end with 2:32 in riding time. Port improved to 21-6.
In a rematch of the PSAC title bout at 149 lbs., sixth-ranked Dave Habat prevailed again over Owen Wilkinson with a 5-0 decision. Habat, now 29-5, grabbed a 2-0 second period lead with a takedown. In the third he added a reversal and he had close to four minutes in riding time.
