WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team suffered a 40-0 shutout loss to visiting fourth-ranked University of Minnesota at Holloway Gymnasium on Sunday, falling to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in conference duals. Minnesota claimed six of the 10 matches by bonus points, improving to 7-2 (3-1 Big Ten Duals).
The first match of the day was the closest as Minnesota freshman Chris Dardanes edged eighth-ranked Boilermakers sophomore Cashé Quiroga at 133 pounds, 7-6. Dardanes struck first, scoring the opening takedown of the bout, but Quiroga responded in the second period, scoring a pair of his own takedowns and taking a 5-5 tie to the third. Quiroga took a one-point edge to start the final period with an escape, but Dardanes responded with a late score and held Quiroga down to earn the narrow victory.
It was all Golden Gophers at 141 and 149 as 16th-ranked freshman Nick Dardanes scored a 12-4 major decision over Purdue freshman Brandon Nelsen at 141 and No. 16 rookie Dylan Ness posted an 11-4 decision over 13th-ranked Boilermaker junior Ivan Lopouchanski at 149. The contest was closer at 157 pounds between Purdue's 20th-ranked junior Tommy Churchard and Minnesota sophomore Alec Ortiz, but Ortiz rode a four-point move to a 5-3 decision, giving the Gophers a 13-0 advantage. Sixth-ranked Minnesota junior Cody Yohn gave his squad a 16-0 lead at the intermission as he scored a first-period takedown en route to a 4-1 victory over Purdue sophomore Kyle Mosier at 165 pounds.
The bonus points started coming in strong after the break for the Golden Gophers, notching two major decisions, two technical falls and a fall. Seventh-ranked freshman Logan Storley started it off with a 10-1 major decision over Purdue rookie Drake Stein at 174 pounds, and No. 8 sophomore Kevin Steinhaus followed with a 17-5 major decision over 19th-ranked Boilermaker freshman Braden Atwood at 184 pounds, dealing Atwood his first conference loss of the season. The Gophers sent out freshman Scott Schiller at 197 pounds and he came away with a 21-6 technical fall over Purdue sophomore Justin Dinius, and fourth-ranked Gopher sophomore Tony Nelson turned Purdue senior Roger Vukobratovich for a first-period fall at heavyweight. Top-ranked Minnesota senior Zach Sanders capped the dual with a 19-4 technical fall over Purdue freshman Luke Schroeder.
The Boilermakers look to bounce back next weekend as they hit the road for a pair of conference duals. They'll visit the University of Wisconsin on Friday for a live Big Ten Network broadcast, set for 8 p.m. (ET), followed by a 1 p.m. dual on Sunday at Big Ten newcomer Nebraska.
