NEW YORK -- The Columbia wrestling team fell to Army, 19-15, on Saturday in the Lions’ 2011-12 home opener in University Gymnasium. Elijah Sullivan, Steve Santos, Stephen West and Kevin Lester picked up wins for Columbia in a thrilling match with seven of the 10 bouts decided by three points or less.

After Army (4-5) built a 7-0 lead with wins at 125 pounds and 133 pounds, first-year Elijah Sullivan put Columbia (3-2) on the scoreboard with an 8-5 win over Casey Smith at 141. Sullivan had a pair of takedowns in the first period to build a 4-1 advantage. He scored a reversal and a takedown in the second to take a 8-2 lead into the final period, where he would hold on for the win.

Santos brought the Lions to within 7-6 when he took a 6-5 win over Ryan Bilyeu in the thrilling 149-pound bout. After a scoreless first period, Santos escaped out of the starting down position and again out of Bilyeu’s ensuing takedown to quickly move the score to 2-2. After a Santos takedown and a Bilyeu escape, the Columbia junior led, 4-3. In the third period, Bilyeu pulled ahead, 5-4, with a takedown but Santos evened the bout with an escape. Santos pulled out the victory when Bilyeu was charged a point after getting multiple stall warnings.

West extended his team-high season win total to 19 when he edged Army’s Ryan Tomkins as a result of riding time. After trailing, 2-1, through the first two periods, West escaped from the down position at the start of the third to even the bout at 2-2. When the match clock wound down, West took the 3-2 win thanks to his 1:06 riding time.

Lester recorded his team-high seventh pin of the season when he defeated Army’s Stephen Snyder by fall in just 49 seconds.

The Lions will next compete in the New York State Tournament on Jan. 21-22 in Ithaca, N.Y. Columbia’s next home date is Feb. 18 when it hosts Brown and Harvard at University Gymnasium.
