The Cerritos College wrestling team had two individual champions and one second place finisher at the Bill Musick Open in Fresno on Saturday. A non-scoring event, the Falcons saw sophomore 197-pound Oscar Martinez (Corona Centennial HS) and sophomore 285-pound Jesse Gomez (Buena Park HS) go unscathed, as they captured first place. Freshman Aaron Negrete (Calvary Chapel HS) came in second place at 157 pounds, with the team also having one third place finisher and two that came in fourth. This Wednesday, Cerritos will host a 6:00 p.m. Southwest Conference match against Palomar College.

Martinez picked up three wins to capture the 197-pound total and opened with a pin in 1:26 over Kris Ruffin of Lassen College. He followed that with an 8-1 victory over Bryce Belian of Cal Baptist University in the semifinals before earning an 8-3 victory against Jay Johnson of Fresno City College. As for Gomez, he needed to win four matches for his championship. A pair of wins by pinfall opened his day, as he beat Santiago Vasquez of West Hills-Lemoore Colege (1:24) and Rio Hondo College's Ian Polling in 3:05. Gomez earned a 12-7 win against Stanford University's Trevor Rasmusses before a 9-3 win in the finals against Kyle Lincoln of West Hills-Lemoore College.

Negrete won his three matches easily to advance to the finals, but was forced to forfeit in the finals against Loreno De La Riva of Cal State University, Bakersfield due to an injury. Prior to getting hurt, Negrete pinned Monserrat Romero of West Hills-Lemoore in 4:44 and then recorded an 11-2 victory against Josh Annis of Fresno City. In the semifinals, Negrete pinned Sean O'Rourke of CSU Bakersfield in 2:45 to reach the finals.

At 133 pounds, the Falcons had the third and fourth place finishers. Freshman Anthony Vargas (Citrus Hill HS) registered a 12-5 win over Julian Melecio of Mt. San Antonio College and then handed Michael Rodriguez of West Hills-Lemoore a 13-11 setback. Vargas dropped a 9-4 decision in the semifinals against eventual champion Jonas Gayton, which sent him to the consolation bracket. He defeated Issac Pilgrim of Sacramento City College, 10-4 and then received an injury forfeit win over sophomore teammate Estevan Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS). Prior to getting hurt, Cabanas defeated Ian Morken of San Joaquin Delta College, 19-7 and pinned Seth Hood of Fresno City in 6:10. He was defeated, 7-4 by Noah Blakely-Benes of CSU Bakersfield, but rebounded for a 10-3 triumph against Trent Smith of Cal Baptist to reach the third round match.
