South Beach Duals

Postby Mat Rat2 » Fri Dec 22, 2017 11:14 am

A quick look at the team matchups in Florida:

I was a little surprised when I looked at the strength of the Cornell field for this event. If you consider the four duals, so forty individual matches for Cornell there only fifteen top twenty opponents. This is using Flo's latest rankings and I very well could have missed a few.

Compared to the potential Scuffle field this is a significant difference. Naturally the team vs individual matchups are not apples to apples but still a difference. Considering the youth of this years team and the potential grind that the Scuffle can be for even a seasoned team probably a reasonable decision to bypass the Scuffle for Florida. Coupled with the South Beach environment over the break an interestly progressive approach to dealing with what many think has become too long a season in college wrestling. Kudos

At a quick glance at what I see as "opportunities for the Cornell guys, actually top 20 ranked guys, I believe I got most of them. Sorry if I missed a few.

125- Russo NR - #3 Lizak Minn

133- Tucker #17 - #9 McGee Minn and #11 Erneste Missouri

141- Yianni #3- #5 Eierman Missouri and #10 Thorn Minn

149- Furnas NR-#11 Breise Minn and #12 Leeth Missouri

157- Santoro NR- #4 Lavelle Missouri, #12 Short Minn, #13 Ream NDS

165- Chavez #20- #9 Wanzek Minn, #19 Forgarty NDS

174 Womack #17- #6 Lewis Missouri

184- Dean #13- None?

197- Honis NR- #2 Miklus Missouri, #7 Macchiavello NDS

285- Sweany. NR, None?

As for the team matchup, the dual comparison online site has:

Cornell 25
NDS 9

Maybe generous picking Chavez over Forgarty and 285 is a tossup IMO so it could be a bit closer

Cornell 7
Missouri 25

I think both Russo and Tucker have reasonable chances. The big one is Yianni vs Eierman who is up to #5 and had a wild freestyle win over Yianni before Yianni responded by teching him a while back. Also I think Sweany has a chance. Overall this one should be closer than they predict and the Big Red have a reasonable chance.

Cornell 25
Kent State 9

I think Honis should be the favorite.

Cornell 17
Minnesota 16

I do not think that McGee majors Tucker
141 is a big one with Yianni vs Thorn who has dropped a few spots recently
I think Chavez has a chance
Overall this should be a really good matchup.

Let's take a closer look when we see the actual lineups next week.

I like this event.

Rob has consistently been at the top of the list in terms of progressive coaches, especially considering his age bracket

There was an attempt in 2014 at a warm weather holiday break wrestling event in Hawaii via the Aloha Open. It included the attraction of the Scuffle allowing teams to bring more than 10 guys, that I believe was 15 per team. The four teams were Minnesota, American, Oklahoma and Oregon State.I believe it was a round robin foremat.

While some folks considered a similiar type of event since, the distance, time/travel and expense were viewed as too much to handle for many schools.

The South Beach Duals seems to be a reasonable attempt to appeal to the student athletes, families and fans.

Let's hope it last longer than the Aloha Open! I think it will.

Trips to Hawai'i are just crippling to a school's expense budget. South Beach should be easier to maintain.

Lehigh went to an event in Hawaii once about 15 years ago, when Greg Strobel was head coach. Greg told me recently that the problem with the trip was that a lot of teams de-committed due to budget problems; Lehigh went ahead and made the trip but wound up with only one match after all that flying.

Me: "That must have been rough. Unexpected free time in Hawaii in mid-winter."

Greg (smirking): "Oh yeah. It was hard."

Track lists 18 wrestlers for Cornell for this event. Darmstadt is shown at 197 along with Honis. No Stroker at 157 though. Jacob Taylor shown at 184.

Could be the big guns for Mizzou and Minny, and the pine squad for Kent State and NDSU.

Slightly off topic, but related: The Scuffle is really down this year; most of the lighter weights have only 3-4 ranked guys. A good tournament, but definitely not the meat grinder of the recent past.

Used to be just one big tournament at the New Year, now there's three. The dilution effect.
