Yianni now #2?

Postby klehner » Mon Dec 18, 2017 9:04 am

YD took out #3 Meredith, who just took out #2 Jack (4-3) and #5 Eierman (3-2). So could be

#1 Heil
#2 Yianni
#3 Meredith
#4 Jack
#5 Eierman

Of course, Yianni gets to face Eierman and #10 Thorn in South Beach in a couple of weeks, so he's got his work cut out for him.

Then again, Heil faces Meredith tomorrow (streamed on Flo). Complete speculation, but if Meredith beats Heil, does Yianni get #1? Probably not, since
Meredith would have much better wins than Yianni.

In any case, this is quite a bunch of very closely-matched wrestlers.

Yeah, bored.

I would think Yianni has to be ranked #2 at this time. The Heil/Meredith outcome will be impactful for sure.

If Heil wins nothing probably changes. If Meredith wins given his three big wins in a few days it might move him to #1 but I think not. I'd say Yainni has a reasonably good chance of sliding into #1.

One thing for sure is that 141 has added a new level of excitement for wrestling fans this season.

Yianni at #2 this morning on Intermat; Flo hasn't updated their rankings (unless they still think Jack should be over Meredith).

I think the Heil/Meredith match is tonight.

Again, if Heil wins he has to stay #1, undefeated and 2 time NCAA champ. Yianni #2, Meredith #3, Jack #4. I could actually live with that going into the NCAA's, let ' face it no easy road for anyone at that point.

If Meredith wins he has the loss to Yianni and the "official but real" loss to Jack in the All Star match, so in my book two losses. Granted he would have big and recent wins over the Missouri guy, Jack and Heil.

Yianni undefeated with wins over Meredith, two over Alber, Nick Lee.

I'd say Yianni #1, Meredith #2, Heil #3, Jack #4. Again no easy road for anyone.

You could make any argument that 141 is as exciting as any weight in all of college wrestling.

I think they may move Yianni over Jack but I suspect that the voting will be a jumble if Meredith beats Heil. Even though Yianni will be the only undefeated wrestler (and a stellar international resume) I think having one signature win - in SV - it will still be a tough sell to put him at #1 over guys with the college resumes that the other three have. By the end of the year, though...

Heil had nothing left in tiebreakers, and Meredith knew it. You don't see too often a #1 just about give up.

Oklahoma State had four top 10 guys lose tonight. Ouch.

The elevation was at 6k feet and was a definite factor.

Talk to David Auble sometime about his only loss in college at the NCAA's first round.

Yianni has two big matches left, Eierman and Thorn. If he wins those matches he has a legitimate argument for being seeded #1 at NCAA's. After the Southern Beach Duals he will still have 3 ranked guys to wrestle, but I don't see them as threats. Eierman is a serious threat.
