Probably a few days early for any significant Vegas discussion without seedings and brackets but can't resist a look at the strength of the potential field. My point of reference is Win, their ranking while generally as good as anyone's are a few days behind. They rank the top 20 in each of the ten weight classes.

A few interesting points. It looks like over half of the top 20 ranked wrestlers will be entered at Vegas with about half of the top six guys possible entries.

Considering that their respective teams will be there, the top ranked guys are at 125 Tomasello ( probably not yet), 174 Z Valencia Arizona State, 197 Kollin Moore Ohio State, and Hwt Kyle Snyder Ohio State(?). Hopefully 3 out of 4 more likely 2 out of 4.

Of special note there is at 141 with 14 of the top 20 (without Yianni who is ranked by most now) although only 2 of the top 6. The big names are Bryce Meredith (Wyoming), Tommy Thorn (Minnesota), and Joey McKenna (Ohio State). The top two EIWA guys (again without Yianni) are # 9 Tyler Smith (Bucknell) and #10 Jared Prince (Navy).

Note that the latest Intermat rankings have Yianni #12 behind potential Vegas entries Meredith (3), McKenna (6), Thorn (8), Prince (9), Zacheri Clarion (10), and Gasco Michigan State (11) and one spot ahead of Alber UNI (12). Given all that it looks like Yianni will be a 4-7 seed, hopefully a little lower than his actual finish. :D

More to come as we get a little closer. One think for sure it that the level of completion will take a big leap for the Big Red.

Note that Nebraska is apparently entered. So add Chad Red at 141 (Intermat #7), Berger (#4) at 165, and White (#11) at 174 as high seeds in the classes that have a higher-seeded Cornell entry.

141 Rankings according to Intermat Nov 21, 2017

Yes Chad Red(d) sp is ranked on most rankings, but for some reason not on WIN list. He lost to Meredith recently, a match you can see on Flo that was fairly competitive and a bit "chippy".
Another young stud we have heard a lot about is Kanen Storr (#19) Iowa State. These are both guys that Yianni could get as early as the quarter finals. The seeding won't come out until the day before at the earliest as I remember, can't wait.
For sure 141 is really loaded!

I will put my little pitch here for attending this fine tournament.

IMHO, it is the Best tournament of the year, by far, in the “fan friendly” category.

All admissions are General Admission. You go in the arena (LasVegas Convention Center) sit for a bit in one of the many bleacher seats, see that “your guy” is up on Mat 3, you walk out of the bleachers, go over and stand a foot away from Mat 3 and watch the match -up close and personal. Then you see an interesting match starting up on Mat 5, you walk over there take your place mat side and watch that match. Repeat all day for 2 days.

I recall there are usually 6 mats going at a time, but it might be 8.

Sometimes no one you care about is currently wrestling, but there is Rob Koll sitting in the second row of the bleachers so you wander over, sit and chat with Rob about whatever is on your mind (who is he recruiting at 125, which 197 pounder has the best chance to win the starting job, etc.) You’ve just become an ‘insider’.

MatRat has already given you the rundown on the high level of completion so I won’t beat that horse. Many tough, tough guys facing each other.

Very reasonable Finances - $200 r/t plane ticket from the east coast to Vegas. Hotel rooms near the venue under $100 a night - only need Thurs & Fri. night stay if you take the Sat. nite red-eye back home. Finals over well before plane takeoffs. Do not recall event ticket prices, but they are not outrageous for the 2day set.

And for those so inclined, there are the slots, tables and ‘stuff going on that stays in Vegas’.

Santoro at 157. Is Galasso injured?

Just saw that W.I.N. ranked Darmstadt and not Honis at 197. So Honis is in the lineup for Vega$. Figures.

Santoro won the trip by winning NYS and Brockport while Galasso was losing against Northern Iowa (even though he finished higher than Santoro at Bingo).

That is a solid dual lineup - will be interesting to see how they do in a major tournament.

On Flo's latest radio broadcast, the talking heads said that Yianni's performance will be the most interesting thing in the tournament. One of them joked he'll have a "I'm here for the Yianni" t-shirt. It will be interesting to see how cautiously he wrestles, given how he wrestled Albers from UNI.

High expectations, indeed.

I think the only question I have about YD right now is whether he has the explosiveness and strength to push points on the top 5-10 ranked kids. I am sure he can do it 15-20. Thought he looked a little tentative against UNI from what I've seen in the past. He will also have the luxury of some of these top kids going after him which should spur some additional offense through his unbelievable defense.

Keep in mind Yianni is just coming back from a long time off the mat, especially from a competition standpoint. I think he will only get more comfortable and explosive as the season progresses.
