CU's NCAA opponents - round 1

Postby JM » Mon Mar 18, 2013 3:10 pm

Except for The Kid, no such thing as an easy match at the NCAAs, even in round 1.

125 Garrett vs Eric Montoya from Campbell Univ with a 33-15 record as a true freshman. Received an at-large bid. Lost in finals of SoCon championship to Chattanooga’s Nick Soto. Eric is a 4x state champ from New Mexico with a 143-10 high school record.

141 Nevinger vs Zach Neibert from Va Tech who is 16-9 as RS-Jr from Dayton,OH. 2x Ohio hs state champ. 2nd in ACC to Evan Henderson. Defeated #4 Tyler Graff of Wisc in dual, 4-3. Lost a month due to injury in VA Duals this year.

149 Villalonga vs Derek Valenti from UVa. 17-8 record as RS-Sr from Newton,NJ. 2nd in ACC losing to Bescetta of VA Tech, 2-0 in finals. All American in 2011. NJ hs state champ in 2008. Brother of 2x NCAA champ, Matt Valenti of Penn.

165 Dake vs Mark Martin from Ohio State, a Freshman with a 17-16 record, 8th in Big 10. 2x Ohio hs state champ from St Edwards.

184 Bosak vs Ty Vinson from Oregon State who has a16-9 record as senior. 3rd in Pac-10. NCAA qualifier last year. 2x Montana hs state champ.

197 – Bennett vs Mario Gonzalez of Illinois. 14-7 record as RS-Jr. Big 10 champ in 2012, 3rd this season. Illinois hs state champ from Aurora, IL. Lost to Iowa’s Burak in Big 10s round 1, then defeated Burak in 3rd place bout. This is a pig-taiol bout.
If Bennett beats Gonzalez, he’ll wrestle Kyven Gadson of Iowa State in round 1. Gadson is a RS-soph with a 25-2 record. He won the Big 8 tournament. He’s a 2x Iowa hs state champ from Waterloo. Son of Willie Gadson, former wrestler and coach who passed away last week.

285 – Lane vs Dom Bradley a 6th year senior. 3x MO hs state champ (2005-7). Won MAC. Ranked #1 with a 35-1 record, losing only to Gelogaev of OkSt 4-3, in dual. Defeated reigning #1 Nelson 2-1 at Scuffle. Defeated Stryker 7-1 at MSG. 3rd in 2011 NCAAs.

Nothing's easy, but the clear favorite everywhere but heavy, where Lane is likely to be Dom-inated.

I would not say that Villalonga or Bennett are clear favorites. Either could be out in 2 or could push to AA if they catch fire and catch a break or 2. Obviously I am hoping for the later scenario. With Rob's track record it seems there is always a guy who surprises us a little bit. Nevinger AAing last year, Leen winning it all his junior year. Anceravage pinning Jay Borschel his junior year. SImaz, AAing as a frosh. Who will it be this year? I am saying that Jace Bennett will be the big surprise this weekend. What say you all?

I always root for Cornell except when they wrestle Lehigh or at tournaments.

KG - surprised you're willing to be so positive and admit that. Good for you. Maybe you're becoming a glass half full kinda guy!

Regarding surprises -- well, I don't know that there will be any -- if there is one, it will be a surprise! haha.
