Class of 2018 recruiting

Postby Ranger123 » Mon Jul 10, 2017 9:41 am

With over 40% of the HS class of 2018 already committed, any inside info on kids leaning to the Big Red?

Good question!

I see one listed on Intermat's 2018 commitment list:

07-06-17 Cornell Ryan Moore Walton-Verona KY 125/133

Any more?

I don't trust Intermat rankings for much. FLow has Moore at 20 and Angelo at 12 at their respective weights. Two good pickups especially when you consider CU seems to downsize classes the years after large recruiting classes.

I've been lurking here for awhile and have learned a lot about wrestling from you "expert" fans of the sport.

Anyway, I thought this news I first saw on Twitter of Andrew Merola's commitment to Cornell would bring joy to my fellow Cornellians: http://www.flowrestling.org/article/58836-5-andrew-merola-commits-to-cornell#.WWU9oFGQxhE

Merola is an excellent middle weight recruit from Blair. Keeping the powerhouse going with some Jersey boys signing in this week.

...which now also includes Cory Cooperman - got to believe he was helpful in Merola & Angelo commits.

Certainly nice to keep the NYS kids home. I think Frankie is viable as a wrestler, not sure if he is an academic fit for the Big Red. Hope so. Cornell has been very astute in first recruiting kids that can get accepted and secondly kids that can do the academic work once they get in.

Obviously need to continue the national recruitment effort to maintain the top 10 status we have been spoiled with.

That is what makes this run of consistency so impressive. Koll & Co are bringing in the right kids who can meet the academic standards and perform on the mat at a very very high level. And while some are top 100 recruits, they are developing many of these kids into competitive D1 wrestlers after they get to Ithaca. From my discussions with Koll, I get a real sense that he knows exactly what he is looking for in a kid (and their family). He may not be able to give you a nice checklist, but he knows it and those kids are getting the job done for the Big Red.
