Six Champs, 25 Place in Season-Opening Grand View Open

The top-ranked Grand View wrestling team opened the 2015-16 season with its annual home GV Open Saturday, Nov. 7 in Pleasant Hill, Iowa. This year there were two divisions, an Open Division and a Freshmen Division.

Grand View dominated the Open Division, having 16 place in the top five and four champions. The Vikings also had nine place in the top five in the Freshmen Division with two champions.

Junior Andrew Long (Creston, Iowa) claimed the Vikings first title of at 141. Long was unattached Saturday and went undefeated (4-0) on the day. Long defeated NCAA Division I wrestler, Logan Ryan from the University of Iowa to claim the title.

Senior Dallas Houchins (Woodburn, Iowa) claimed another title for the Vikings in the 165 weight class. Houchins and went undefeated (4-0). He won by tech fall (23-6, 17-0) in two of his matches and beat NCAA I South Dakota State's Spencer Derifield by 6-0 decision to claim the title.

Michael Pixley (Granite City, Ill.), who wrestled unattached on Saturday, won at 184 pounds. The sophomore quickly pinned his first two opponents (:56, :15) and won a 7-1 decision over Derek Nagel of NCAA Div II Southern Illinois Edwardsville in the championship bout.

Sophomore Dean Broghammer (Manchester, Iowa) crushed his opponents in the 285 bracket. Broghammer went 4-0 on the day with two tech falls (16-0, 17-0), a pin, and a major decision in the finals with a 10-0 win over Chris Johnson of Southern Illinois Edwardsville.

In the Freshman Division, both Josh Wenger (Walford, Iowa) at 141 and Evan Hansen (Kimballton, Iowa) 197 won titles Saturday; Wenger was 4-0 and Hansen 3-0 on the day.

The Vikings next compete in two events on November 14 – the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D. and the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open in Ames.
