Oskaloosa--Despite claiming two victories by fall and another by technical fall, the William Penn wrestling team still lost its home opener 28-17 to Waldorf Tuesday.
The night began with the Statesmen (0-1) dropping the first two matches before Tommy Kozak (Jr., Belleville, Mich., Thiel) electrified the crowd with a 17-2 technical fall win at 141 pounds.
Eric Burgey (So., Easton, Pa., Easton HS) continued to build the emotional momentum by pinning his 149-pound opponent in 51 seconds. That gave the hosts their biggest advantage of the night at 11-6.
Unfortunately, a balanced Warrior team (2-5) strung together three straight wins, including one by major decision to reclaim the edge 16-11 with three matches remaining.
Kyle Soderblom (Fr., Newton, Lynnville-Sully HS) then put the Statesmen back on top in the seesaw battle with another fall, his team-leading fourth of the year, in a time of 1:42.
William Penn held early leads in both the 197-pound and heavyweight matches, but failed to close the door. Both matches were eventually lost by fall as Waldorf, who won seven of the ten matches, rallied to claim the dual meet victory.
Next: William Penn travels to Storm Lake Saturday to compete in the Buena Vista Open. Action begins at 9 a.m.
