Oskaloosa--Even though he has not officially competed in a match, Eric Burgey (So., Easton, Pa., Easton HS) retained his top ranking as the NAIA released its first regular season wrestling rating last week.
Burgey, who was fifth at last year's national championships, is still #1 at 149 pounds. The team's lone ranked grappler finished 33-4 a year ago with eight falls to his credit.
The sophomore helped William Penn to 15th place in the national poll with 20 points.
Campbellsville (Ky.) takes over the top spot with 115.5 points, holding off preseason #1 Southern Oregon by one point. Grand View, Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), and Great Falls (Mont.) round out the top five.
Fellow Central Qualifying Group programs Oklahoma City (#6), Missouri Valley (#10), and Baker (Kan.) (#12) are also in the top 20.
The Statesmen also dropped a rung in the Central Group rating. William Penn is eighth with 40 points, while defending champion Grand View is first with 178 points. Baker jumped two spots to #2 with 173 points.
Burgey tops the 149-pound group, while only two other athletes are in the poll. 184-pounder Kyle Soderblom (Fr., Newton, Lynnville-Sully HS) and 197-pounder Chris Diaz (Sr., Montrose, Colo., Olathe HS) are both fifth at their respective weights.
