Barger stays perfect for Warriors at Mount Union Duals

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Junior Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) won all four of his bouts, including two by pin and one by technical fall, to lead the No. 23 Lycoming College wrestling team on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Mount Union Duals, as Lycoming beat No. 28 Heidelberg, 26-15, but the team fell to No. 14 Baldwin-Walace, 29-6, Ferrum, 22-17 and No. 20 Alma, 33-9.

Barger is a perfect 6-0 on the season and 71-20 in his career after the wins, as the nation's second-ranked grappler posted 20 team points during the meet for the Warriors (3-3 overall).

The Warriors, who were hurt by a pair of missing starters, overcame a rough start to the meet by posting a 26-15 win in the nightcap against 28th-ranked Heidelberg (0-5 overall).

Lycoming posted three bonus-point wins in the bout, starting the run with a 19-2 technical fall by 125-pound sophomore Kyle Drick (Allenwood, Pa./Montgomery) against Derek Thomas. After a pair of wins gave Heidelberg a 9-3 lead, decisions from junior 149-pounder Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) and senior 157-pounder Matt Neff (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) tied the dual at nine.

Barger gave Lycoming the lead for good at 165, as he planted Darren Decker in 1:31 and sophomore Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) added a pin of Tyler Hammack in 1:46 at 174 to make it 23-9. The Student Princes won the next two matches by decision, but freshman Tom Lynd (Woodbury Heights, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) closed out the match with a 12-5 win over Napoleon Bell to make the final score 26-15.

Lycoming came up just short against Ferrum (5-0 overall), as a 3-2 win by Tate Dulany at heavyweight helped the Panthers clinch the win.

The Panthers posted a decision and a major decision in the first two bouts before freshman Joseph Santomarco (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) posted a 2-1 sudden-victory win over Collin Saunders at 141 and Lansberry posted a 7-2 win over Paul Biggs at 149. After a Ferrum win at 157, Barger gave Lycoming an 11-10 lead with n 18-1 win over Mark Allan at 165. Conrad followed with a pin of Blake Rosenbaum at 174 in 4:35 to make it 17-10, but Ferrum won the last three bouts to make up the final margin.

In the morning session, 14th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace used three bonus-point wins and eight wins in the match to post a 29-6 win over the Warriors.

Lycoming notched two decisions in the match, with sophomore Kyle Drick (Allenwood, Pa./Montgomery Area) posting a 9-7 win over Chris Doyle at 125 pounds and Barger notching a 3-1 win over Blake Perry at 165 pounds.

Alma won eight bouts in Lycoming's third-meet of the day, posting a 33-9 win. Lansberry notched a 10-4 win over Jarrett Sadler at 149 and Barger pinned Taylor McPhail in 5:31.

The Warriors get back on the mat on after the Thanksgiving break, when they head to the Ohio Northern University Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 9 a.m.
