Shade Named Super Region 2 Wrestler Of The Week

Nov 24, 2015
NEWBERRY, S.C. – An impressive week on the mat – one that saw him oust four NCAA Division I foes - has earned junior Blaze Shade D2Wrestle.com Super Region 2 Wrestler of the Week honors, the publication announced Tuesday.

Shade, an Erial, N.J., product, amassed a 7-1 record across two NC State-hosted events last week, including a 4-1 record against NCAA Division I competition. He began his week with a perfect 3-0 mark at Saturday's Wolfpack Duals at Cary Academy, and then logged a runner-up finish at Sunday's Wolfpack Open inside Carmichael Gymnasium. Of his seven wins on the week, four were of the bonus-point variety.

He opened up the Wolfpack Duals with a 12-4 major decision over Campbellsville's Sean Black who is ranked 15th in the latest National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) poll at 174 pounds, and then did away with NC State starter Lee Davis via a 5-2 decision. Shade wrapped up his day at the event with a 13-5 major decision over Cumberland's Corey Daniels.

He registered four-straight wins at Sunday's Wolfpack Open, including punching his ticket to the championship bout with a tight 3-2 decision over defending Southern Conference (SoCon) champion Sean Mappes of Chattanooga. Shade's season-opening 13-match win streak would eventually be snapped in the title bout by NC State's Nicky Hall – the Wolfpack's starter at 184 pounds during the 2014-15 campaign.

Currently listed seventh in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Poll at 174 pounds, Shade has tallied a 13-1 record this season with three pins, two technical falls and three major decisions. A three-year starter for the Black & Gold, he has compiled a 68-21 (.764) career record with 32 bonus-point victories (15 pins, 3 technical falls, 14 major decisions) and is 35-15 all-time against NCAA Division II competition.
