The Griffin wrestling team opened their season with a nearly full squad at the Mount Union Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The team had a solid start with eight wrestlers earning top seven finishes. SHU had two second place finishes, one third place, three fourth places and two seventh place finishes.

Ty Lydic and Jacob Temple led the Griffins with second place finishes. Lydic opened with a 3-2 win before earning a 22-5 tech fall (6:25) win in his second match. He won the quarterfinal match by a 6-2 score and advanced to the finals with a 10-2 win in the semifinals of the 149 pound weight class. Lydic then fell in overtime to preseason regional #1 Jeremy Landowski of Mercyhurst by a 3-1 score. Temple opened with a 9-1 win in his first match. He followed that with a 10-3 win in the quarterfinal. Temple advanced to the finals with a 4-3 overtime win in the semifinals. Temple was then defeated by fall (1:00) in the final match of the 197 pound weight class.

Alex Soutiere earned a third place finish in the 285 pound weight class. Soutiere opened with a 5-3 loss before battling his way though the consolation rounds. He followed the loss with a win by fall (0:59) and a 7-3 win. Alex then earned another win by fall (4:33) before earning a 1-0 decision win to advance to the third place match. Soutiere earned his third pin of the day with a win by fall (1:35) in the third place match.

Collin Dees earned a fourth place finish at 125 pounds. He opened with a 6-4 win. He dropped into the consolation rounds with a 9-0 loss. Dees won his next match 5-4 before falling 8-4 in the third place match. Christian Bosco also finished fourth in the 165 pound weight class. Bosco opened with a win by fall (2:24). He then dropped his second match 7-4. Bosco then earned two one point wins (4-3 & 6-5) before getting a win by fall (1:19) in the consolation semifinal. Christian then dropped a 6-2 decision in the third place match. Morris Lawson was also fourth in the 184 pound weight class. Lawson opened with a 7-2 win. He then fell 7-6 in overtime in his second match. Lawson advanced to the third place match with a win by fall (5:26) before falling by tech fall (16-0 - 5:38) in the third place match.

Rodney Sunday and Jake Willochell each finished in seventh place. Sunday opened the 133 pound weight class with a 6-5 loss. He responded with a 7-3 and 6-1 victory. Sunday was then defeated by fall (6:23) before winning by tech fall (16-0 - 4:02) in the seventh place match. Willochell opened the 149 pound weight class with a 7-2 win. He then lost by tech fall (16-1 - 4:54) before rallying for a 4-0 win. He dropped a 7-2 decision before winning 3-2 in the seventh place match.

The team will travel to Millersville for their first PSAC dual match of the season on Thursday at 7 PM.
