Trojans Stumble at The Citadel, 35-13

November 11, 2015
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite posting four victories throughout the dual, Anderson University wrestling saw its comeback bid fall short, dropping to Division I The Citadel, 35-13, Wednesday evening at McAlister Field House.

With the setback, the Trojans have fallen in their first four duals of the season, as all four setbacks have come against Division I opponents. The Bulldogs, who fended off rival VMI earlier in the year, improve to a perfect 2-0.

After a forfeit to open the dual at 125, Anderson bounced back with a victory at 133, as freshman Derek Bohle posted an 8-0 major decision over The Citadel’s Andrew Clayton. For Bohle, the win was his fourth of the young season and second over Clayton on the year.

The Trojans would wait until the 165-pound match to find their next points, as sophomore Jared Costa tallied his first victory of the season, notching a 9-6 decision over Zach Appleby. In the following bout, junior Trevontay Rhodes also earned his first triumph with an 8-2 decision over Timothy Knipl at 174. For Rhodes, the victory was his third over a Division I opponent since arriving at AU.

Sophomore Michael Gallagher found Anderson’s final team points of the evening, as he avenged an earlier-season loss to The Citadel’s Sawyer Root at 184. Gallagher fell by a 6-5 decision to Root in the semifinals of The Citadel Open to begin the season, but answered with a 6-2 decision, tonight, to set Anderson’s score at 13.

“This was a much better overall effort tonight,” Anderson head coach Dock Kelly said. “It was great to see the hard work pay off individually for the guys that secured wins. The level of competition level will remain tough next week, so we will continue to train and work hard in preparation over the next 10 days.”

The Trojans return to the mats on Nov. 21 when they take part in the Wolfpack Duals, hosted by NC State. AU opens the Duals with Cumberland (noon), followed by Campbellsville (2 p.m.) and wraps up the day with a meeting with the Wolfpack (4 p.m.)
