BUENVA VISTA, Va. – The Alderson Broaddus University wrestling team improved to 5-0 on the season as they topped Southern Virginia 38-3 Friday night in its dual match.

"Southern Virginia was tough tonight," said head coach Sam Gardner. "Their guys fought hard in every position. I'm not sure we were expecting that at every weight, but it was a good learning experience for us."

To start the night off, Jacob Monn moved to 4-1 on the year with a major decision victory at 133 lbs.

Micah Powell made his season debut at 141 and earned a 6-3 decision on the strength of a second period ride that resulted in a tilt and four back points.

After, Chris Brent moved to 4-0 on the season with a forfeit victory at 149. At the 157 pound weight class, Jason West survived a slow start to storm back in the second period with a takedown and near fall points to earn a 16-7 major decision win.

"Technically we needed to move our feet and create more motion in order to open up our scoring," said Gardner. "We are still going out and scoring bonus points at a good clip, which encourages me. These guys have some firepower, we just need to direct it better in some situations."

Logan Shurina was involved in a physical bout at 165. Tied at two after the first period Shurina was able to open up the lead on the strength of a pair of takedowns in the second and third periods, and earn an 8-3 decision.

The Battlers scored 18 team points in the last three bouts. Cody Spinks moved to 5-0 on the year on the year with a pin in the opening period while Josiah Solak moved to 4-1 with his team leading third pin of the year when he moved up to 197. Nick Nester finished the night and brought the score to 38-3 with a forfeit victory at 285 lbs.

"We'll learn from tonight, and we'll be back tomorrow with the intent to be better than we were today," said Gardner. "I'm excited to see how the guys rise to the challenge on Saturday."

AB returns to action Saturday in Southern Virginia for the Casperson Classic.
