Wrestling Posts Impressive Individual Efforts at The Citadel Open

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Anderson University wrestling opened its 2015-16 schedule on Sunday at The Citadel open and saw two reach the podium, as senior Zak Hale and sophomore Michael Gallagher finished third in their respective weight class at the annual tournament on Sunday.

Hale, who moved down two weight classes from his normal 133-pound position, finished the day with a 5-1 record in the 149-pound bracket as an unattached wrestler. Within his five victories on the season, Hale earned a second-round pin over Seton Hill’s Deonte Mitchell at the 4:03 mark in the second period. The senior capped off his afternoon with a 6-4 decision over Adrian Gomez for his second victory over the Baron for the Open.

Gallagher began his day with back-to-back victories over Spartanburg Methodist’s Austin Thompson (TF, 16-0) and Central Florida’s Chandler Dobier (D 7-4) before seeing his run to a 184-pound title come to a close in the semifinals to The Citadel’s Sawyer Root. Gallagher bounced back with a pair of victories in the wrestleback bracket to earn third place, marking his best finish in an Open tournament for his collegiate career.

Freshman Dan Ebert matched Gallagher’s four-win total, finishing with a 4-2 record at 157 pounds. Ebert posted consecutive pins to begin his tournament campaign, before suffering his first setback in the quarterfinals to Limestone’s Deandre Johnson (D 4-2). Ebert added his third pin in the wrestleback bracket before falling to NAIA All-American, Nathen Pristavec of Brewton Parker.

Classmate Derek Bohle also shined in his collegiate debut finished the tournament with a 3-2 record at 133 pounds. Despite dropping his opening-round bout, Bohle tallied three victories in the wrestleback bracket, headlined by a pair of pins, before falling in the quarterfinals.

Tyler Fitzpatrick (133), Dylan Crossland (149) and Waddell McNeely (157) all posted two victories in their respective weight classes, while Conor Caffrey added a victory in the 141 bracket.

Anderson opens its dual slate on Saturday when it travels to the Appalachian State Duals to square off against three Division I opponents. The Trojans begin the day against the host, Mountaineers, at 10 a.m., followed by a meeting with CSU Bakersfield beginning at noon, while wrapping up the afternoon with Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m.
