Wrestling Trio Ranked Regionally in Preseason Basford Rankings

October 22, 2015
ANDERSON, S.C. – As the 2015-16 wrestling season approaches, three members of the Anderson University wrestling team were ranked in the Preseason NCAA Division II Super Region II Basford Rankings, announced by the rankings committee on Wednesday.

Senior Zak Hale led the way by earning the No. 3 spot at 133, while sophomore Tyler Fitzpatrick and junior Trevontay Rhodes each claimed the No. 8 position at 125 and 174, respectively. Between the three grapplers, the trio combined for 57 wins a season ago.

Hale enters this season after advancing to three straight NCAA Championships in the past three seasons. For his career, Hale boasts a 67-24 overall record, headlined by victories over eight Division I opponents in duals. A season ago, Hale notched a career-high 24 victories and earned a spot on the Division II Academic All-America list, voted on by the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.

Rhodes closed the 2014-15 season with a 23-10 overall record in his first campaign with the Black and Gold after transferring from Campbellsville. Rhodes ended the year with a sixth-place finish at the Super Region II Tournament and headlined his season with a pair of wins over Division I opponents.

Fitzpatrick rounded out last year with a 10-13 record inside the 125 weight class, headlined by six victories in duals. The Plaistown, N.H. native grabbed wins over opponents from UNC Pembroke, Davidson, Belmont Abbey and Limestone last season in his first season with the program.

As a team, the Trojans earned eight points in the regional poll to draw even with Belmont Abbey for 12th place. At the top of the poll, Newberry and Ashland share the top spot with 43 points apiece.

AU opens its season on Sunday, Nov. 1 at The Citadel Open and begins its dual schedule on Nov. 7 at the Appalachian State Duals.
