Four Teams Claim PSAC Top Team GPA Awards; Mercyhurst Second In Overall GPA

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Four Mercyhurst University teams - football, women's lacrosse, men's tennis, and wrestling - were honored by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) on Tuesday for having the highest team GPA in their respective sports. All four squads earned the distinction of winning the PSAC's Top Team GPA Awards, as announced by PSAC Commissioner Steve Murray. Now in their fourth year of existence, the awards are issued among all 21 sports.

The awards, released at the conclusion of the academic year, honor the teams with the top cumulative team grade point average in each of the sponsored sports within the PSAC. The league hosts 23 championships, however, for the award purposes, indoor and outdoor track & field are counted as a single sport.

Women's lacrosse established the school's highest team GPA with a 3.651 to claim the PSAC Top Team GPA Award for the third consecutive season. Men's tennis was right behind with a 3.604 team GPA and claimed the PSAC's honor for the fourth straight time. Football was the only PSAC school with a team GPA above a 3.0 and finished with a 3.135 to earned the league's top spot. Wrestling edged both Lock Haven and Seton Hill to win the league award with a 3.078 team GPA. Both football and wrestling finished second a year ago.

Mercyhurst's four Top Team GPA awards were the second-highest total in the PSAC trailing only Seton Hill's nine winners. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst's cumulative GPA across all PSAC sports was a 3.359 and again trailed only Seton Hill (3.442) in that category. The school's 3.359 cumulative GPA was a dramatic improvement over the 3.228 figure from the 2013-14 academic year. In fact, none of Mercyhurst's 17 PSAC sports had a team GPA below a 3.0 - the only school in the conference that achieved the feat.

Six teams (men's basketball, men's cross country, women's golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, and women's tennis) finished second in the race for the top team GPA in their sports, while one other (men's golf) finished third. Baseball, women's basketball, and softball also had top five finishes in the team GPA award - each finished fourth.
