The Citadel will host the Southern Conference Wrestling Tournament in 2009.

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel’s wrestling program and head coach Rob Hjerling announced their 2008-09 schedule on Friday. Highlighting the schedule are five home dual matches allowing wrestling enthusiasts the opportunity to check out the Bulldogs from November through March, when they will host the Southern Conference Championships.

"Considering the new NCAA qualification system and the RPI, I am very happy with this years' schedule," stated Hjerling. “With the tournaments that we are competing in, along with some key dual meets, I believe that our wrestlers will have every opportunity to compete against some excellent competition."

This year’s schedule features trips to major tournaments such as the Reno Tournament of Champions, the Southern Scuffle, the Penn State Open, and the All-Academy Championships. The Citadel will be traveling to competitive open tournaments as well as hosting their own, The Citadel Open, with hopes of helping the younger grapplers gain experience.

The Cadets will open their season on Friday, Nov. 7 in McAlister Field House at 7 p.m. as they host Belmont Abbey. The wrestling action will continue on Saturday, Nov. 8 with The Citadel Open, a tournament for freshmen and sophomores from around the region. The wrestling team will add to the homecoming excitement as they host Liberty in a dual match in McAlister Field House at 11 a.m. prior to the football game on Nov. 15. The Citadel will also host the Bobcats from Ohio University on Dec. 4.

The Bulldogs will then face some of the nation’s top competition in December at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Nevada. The tournament schedule will then continue with the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. closing out 2008. The Citadel looks to face many of the nation’s top teams in the two tournaments.

The Bulldogs will start Southern Conference competition on Jan. 30 in Chattanooga against the Mocs, and will continue as they travel up to Lexington, Va., to face the Keydets from VMI. Bulldog action will continue as The Citadel hosts UNC Greensboro and Gardner-Webb to round out the season on Feb. 21 and 24, respectively. The Cadets will host the SoCon Championships on Mar. 7 at home in McAlister Field House.
