11/21/15 Campbell Places Four at Navy Classic

Postby Allen Brown » Sun Nov 22, 2015 8:06 am

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Campbell wrestling sent 13 wrestlers to the 38th Annual Navy Classic where the Camels had four grapplers place and a team finish of ninth overall. No. 20 Nathan Kraisser (133 lbs), Luke Stewart (141 lbs), and Paul Duggan (165 lbs) all finished fourth, while Ville Heino finished fifth at 184 lbs. Princeton finished first with 139.0 team points to claim the team victory while Campbell finished ninth with 58.5 team points.

No. 20 Nathan Kraisser finished the day 3-2 wrestling in the 133-pound weight class and placed fourth overall. Kraisser got off to a rocky start dropping his opening match to Rodriguez (George Mason) in a 4-2 decision. Moving to the consolation bracket, he received a bye before earning three consecutive decisions. Kraisser defeated Kelly (Ohio) 11-8, Davis (U.S. Naval Academy) 5-4, and Salvo (Brown) 8-1.

Kraisser reached the third place match where he faced Tutolo of Kent State. Tutolo won the third place title after pinning Kraisser in a quick 26 seconds and knocked the Camel out of podium contention for a fourth place finish.

Luke Stewart started off strong as he cruised to a 16-0 tech fall over Renkey from GMU. Stewart lost in the quarterfinal bout to Driscoll of Kent State in a decision (6-3). He moved to the consolation round and pinned his first opponent, Kenyon from the USNA, in 4:43. Stewart followed with a 13-2 major decision over Reich (Princeton).

Stewart downed Rowh from Wisconsin in the consolation semifinal bout in a 6-3 decision and moved to the third place match where he fell to Anthony (GMU) by one point in a 5-4 decision. He finished fourth in the 141-pound weight class and earned 14 team points for the Camels.

Paul Duggan also claimed a fourth-place finish at the Navy Classic as well as 12.50 team points going 3-2 on the day. After a first round bye, Duggan recorded his second fall of the season by pinning Schiltt from Bucknell in 6:35. He won the quarterfinal match against Ashughyan (Ohio) in an 8-5 decision to advance to the semifinals.

Duggan faced Jordan from Wisconsin in the 165-pound semifinal bout who defeated the Camel in a 6-2 decision. Continuing to the consolation bouts, Duggan won in the consolation semis taking down Liegel (Wisconsin) in a 6-2 decision before falling to NCAA qualifier Buckwalter (Kent St.) in a sudden victory decision 7-5 and earning a fourth place title.

Wrestling at 184 pounds, Ville Heino was the fourth Camel to earn a top-five finish. Heino went 4-2 on the day earning his first win in a 16-0 tech fall over Princeton's Shepperd. He followed that with a 5-3 decision over Romanchik (Ohio) and a 10-7 decision over the UNSA's Bannister. Heino moved to the semifinal bout but fell to Sleigh of Bucknell in a 7-2 decision. Baxter of Kent State took down the Camel in the consolation semifinal in a 15-0 tech fall.

Heino finished on a high note as he won the fifth place title by recorded an 18-1 tech fall over Stilling from Wisconsin. Heino finished with 12.00 team points as the last placer for the Camels.

The Camels return to the mat on Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Wolfpack Open at NC State in Raleigh, N.C.

Also a respectable 6th place finish at Vegas with 1 semifinalist. Campbell is most definitely making progress. Shall see if they can hand with Appalachian State and U. of Tennessee-Chattanooga come Southern Conference tournament. The big jump will be next year with more recruits coming off redshirt year again. Year 3 of the Kolat experience.

Impressed with Campbell at the Southern Scuffle. Sitting in 14th place going into the medal round ahead of some historically very good teams. Only at the half-way point of a season with a full line-up. Thinking they may qualify 4 for nationals. Then a good group coming off redshirt and another good group going on redshirt. Could be a Top 30 team within 2 years.

Agree on Campbell, very nice tournament for Paul Duggan at 165, Kraisser has talent, but is inconsistent for sure. The Heino brothers are also talented (from Finland), I think Ville can get an NCAA bid this year. I think Stewart at 141 will develop as well, may not qualify this year, but next.

Good outing against Appalachian State. 3 matches decided by 1 point or OT. Was a winnable for Campbell...which is huge improvement over last year. Kolat has guys coming off redshirt plus new recruits and now a full team that will have a year under their belt together. The will make another big leap in talent next year. I think they can qualify 4 for NCAA.

Goes to show you that in the end it is all about a coach, a collective vision and hard work. All the fancy gyms and equipment do not necessarily make a difference.

As a fan of wrestling and especially any PA wrestlers who become NCAA coaches, it is a pleasure to see someone reverse the course of a program and see the enthusiasm that is occurring down there. Based on wrestlestat team ranking, Campbell #73 was right there with #27 Appalachian State. I have no doubt that next year Campbell will be a Top 40 program. It is going to leap from an number of SoCon teams and be battling for status in that league with UT-Chattanooga and Gardner-Webb. Probably two year out from supplanting Appalachian State.

Campbell has gone to the well and used a number of freshmen and redshirt freshmen so far this season.

Not exactly sure, but believe these guys have not redshirted yet. The upside is they only lose 1 senior and have 26 new potential wrestlers for next year, but seem to only have to fill 165 Paul Duggan. Give they will have close to 40 in the room, expect their wrestlers to be at a lot of Opens.

Campbell is a very interesting program with Yea 3 next year likely a big jump. The will probably peak in Year 5 when all of Kolat's recruits reach 5th year in room. Even more impressive is that Kolat has recruited NY to Fl as well Midwest and even California. All by Year 2! It is most definitely a program that is improving every single week.

What happened to the walker twins? I saw there no longer on the listed roster. They were on track to have solid careers for campbell.
