Cal Poly to Wrestle Old Dominion on Saturday at Gilroy High School

Nov 17, 2015
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the first time in more than 33 years, Cal Poly will face Old Dominion for a dual wrestling meet. And the two programs will tangle on a neutral mat.

The Mustangs, 22-15 winners over the Monarchs in the Virginia Duals on Jan. 15, 1982, will meet Old Dominion for the second time Saturday at 6 p.m. at Gilroy High School. Old Dominion also will wrestle San Francisco State at 3 p.m.

Old Dominion, which fell 21-16 to Virginia in its only dual meet of the year so far, will bring three nationally ranked wrestlers to the West Coast.

Alexander Richardson is ranked No. 4 by InterMat at 141 pounds while both Chris Mecate at 141 pounds and Jack Dechow at 184 pounds are ranked No. 6.

Richardson is a three-time NCAA qualifier with an 85-34 career mark, earning All-American honors by placing seventh a year ago. Mecate is 110-43 for his Monarch career also also is a three-time national qualifier, placing sixth last March. Dechow owns an 88-21 career record and twice has qualified for the NCAAs.

Head coach of the Monarchs is Steve Martin, an All-American wrestler from Iowa who has guided 51 Monarchs into the NCAA Championships in his first 11 years with the program. Martin is 131-78-3 in dual meets at Old Dominion.

The Monarchs are ranked No. 24 in the dual meet poll compiled by InterMat.

Cal Poly sports a 1-2 dual meet mark so far with a 29-8 win over San Francisco State and a 35-6 loss to Stanford and 28-12 to Drexel.

Fifth-year head coach Brendan Buckley's Mustangs are coming off a solid performance in the Roadrunner Open last Sunday at Selland Arena in Fresno, producing one champion and a total of 10 place winners.

Junior J.T. Goodwin captured top honors at 197 pounds, including a pin in just 57 seconds in the final round against 14th-ranked Reuben Franklin of CSU Bakersfield. Goodwin has yet to crack the top 20 in his weight class in the national polls despite his perfect 7-0 record with four falls.

Colt Shorts (pictured above) placed second at 157 pounds with a 3-1 mark and is 5-2 for the year while 133-pounder Jason DelaCruz finished third with a 5-1 record and will take a 6-2 mark into Saturday's dual.

Jacob Leon is 5-2 for the year with a fifth-place finish at 149 pounds at the Roadrunner Open while 125-pounder David Gonzalez sports a 7-4 mark and 165-pounder Joe Granger is 5-4 with a fifth-place finish on Sunday.

Cal Poly will be idle next week, returning to action Dec. 4-5 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, to be held at the Cashman Center.
