11/15/15 Bakersfield Claims 3 Titles at Roadrunner Open

FRESNO, Calif—Three CSU Bakersfield wrestlers took home top honors at the Roadrunner Open Sunday afternoon in Selland Arena.

Redshirt senior Ian Nickell finished first at 141 pounds. Nickell defeated Isiah Moten of Stanford who was competing unattached in the finals. Nickell went 43-9 in his four tournament matches.

Redshirt senior Bryce Hammond took home first place at 174 pounds. Hammond tallied a pin in his first match before recording three consecutive shutouts including a 6-0 decision against Patrick Jennings of Edinboro in the finals.

Lorenzo De La Riva, a true freshman who is redshirting for the Roadrunners this season, won his third open tournament of the year at 157 pounds. De La Riva recorded a 5-0 mark on the day after defeating Colton Shorts of Cal Poly 12-4 in the finals. De La Riva improved to 13-0 in open competition.

Reuben Franklin made it to the finals at 197 pounds before being pinned by Cal Poly’s JT Goodwin 57 seconds into the first period.

AJ Fierro placed third at 157 pounds. Fierro made it to the semifinals before losing 3-1 to Shorts. Winning in the consolation semifinals, Fierro defeated Richard Ortiz of Simpson (Calif.) 5-2 in the third place bout.

Coleman Hammond came in fourth at 149 pounds. Hammond reached the semifinals where he dropped a 6-4 decision to Edinboro’s Patrick Lugo. Hammond won his consolation semifinal before losing to No. 16 Matt Cimato of Drexel 6-2 in the third place match.

Matt Williams placed third at heavyweight. Williams reached the semifinals where he lost 6-5 to Edinboro’s William Miller. He won the consolation semifinals before pinning Trevor Rasmussen of Stanford (who was competing unattached) 1:02 into the first period.

Sean Nickell, a 2015-16 CSUB redshirt, placed fifth at 125 pounds when earned a major decision (13-5) against Menlo’s Troy Lakin.

Roadrunner teammates Carlos Herrera and Adrian Panduro met in the fifth place match at 133 pounds. Herrera earned the position when he defeated Panduro 9-5.

In three open tournaments this season, 12 CSUB wrestlers have placed first.

The Roadrunners compete in the Icardo Center for the first time this season Friday night when CSUB hosts No. 1 Penn State at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com
