STANFORD, Calif. - Dan Scherer, a freshman during the 2010-11 wrestling season, was selected to the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Division I All-Academic True Freshmen Team the association announced Monday.
Those included on the five-member team have been recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom and on the wrestling mat.
In order to be selected each individual must have completed one full year at their institution and have met a particular GPA and competition mark.
Four of these true freshman competed at the NCAA Division I Championships: Tyler Small (Kent State), Alan Waters (Missouri), Joseph Spisak (Virginia) and Devin Carter (Virginia Tech).
"These student-athletes are in a huge transitional year as they work to adapt to college life. Being able to see their success at this stage both academically and athletically is quite the accomplishment. We look forward to seeing many more great things from these student-athletes in the future," said NWCA President Brian Smith.
Scherer (3.20) rounds out the top freshman wrestlers academically in 2010-11. He follows in the footsteps of teammate Ryan Mango, who was honored by the NWCA for the same award last year.
