SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The fifth time was the charm for Cal Poly junior Ryan Smith.
The Mustang 197-pound wrestler was 0-4 in his collegiate career against Cal State Bakersfield’s Riley Orozco before earning a 9-7 overtime decision and clinching No. 22 Cal Poly’s 23-12 Pac-10 dual meet victory over the Roadrunners on Friday night before 907 in Mott Gym.
Smith was penalized for stalling late in the third period, tying the match at 7-7 and sending it into extra time. Smith ended the match with a takedown 28 seconds into the first overtime period, improving to 13-5 on the season.
Smith’s victory gave Cal Poly an insurmountable 23-9 lead with one bout remaining. The Mustangs are 7-1 in duals this season, including a 3-1 mark in Pac-10 matches. Cal State Bakersfield fell to 3-4 and 1-2.
Orozco, ranked 17th at 197 by InterMat this week, had beaten Smith (pictured above) three times in the 2009-10 season by 9-4, 3-1 and 11-5 decisions and also beat the Mustang junior from Temecula, Calif., by a 13-3 major decision in the 2008-09 season.
The Mustangs won five of the first six bouts to build a 20-3 advantage.
Bonus points were earned by Cal Poly 141-pounder Boris Novachkov with a technical fall and 157-pounder Barrett Abel with his seventh fall of the season.
Novachkov, ranked No. 4 in the nation by InterMat, improved to 21-1 on the year with a 19-4 technical fall (5:35) over Jose Mendoza.
Abel pinned Anthony Box in just 51 seconds to lift his record to 20-8. The 2010 Pac-10 champion at 149 pounds and a transfer from UC Davis surrendered a takedown early in the first period before escaping and turning the tables with a takedown of his own, pinning Box moments later.
Filip Novachkov, wrestling two weight classes up at 149, survived a scare with a 12-10 overtime decision over John Cardenas. Novachkov, ranked No. 14 at 133, is 8-6 on the year after rallying from an 8-5 second-period deficit.
Novachkov twice surrendered a reversal and two-point near fall in the second period as Cardenas built his three-point advantage. The Mustang senior overcame the deficit with two takedowns in the final period, the latter with three seconds left, and 2:26 of riding time to knot the bout at 10-10.
Novachkov’s fifth takedown of the match with eight seconds remaining in the first overtime period ended the first of Cal Poly’s two overtime wins.
Britain Longmire and Ryan DesRoches both registered 5-2 decisions to help Cal Poly build its 20-3 cushion.
Longmire beat Miguel Comparan in the 125-pound bout, building an early 4-1 lead and holding on, while DesRoches, ranked No. 16, overcame an early first-period takedown to beat Trevor Hall at 165 pounds. Longmire is now 12-7 on the year while DesRoches improved to 27-5.
Cal State Bakersfield won the bouts at 174 and 184 to pull to within 20-9 before Smith’s overtime decision wrapped up the dual meet victory for Mustang co-head coaches John Azevedo, who wrestled at Cal State Bakersfield more than 30 years ago, and Mark Perry.
Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield wrestled for the 43rd time Friday night. The Roadrunners still lead the all-time series 25-16-2, though the Mustangs have won two straight.
Cal Poly returns to action with another Pac-10 dual meet Sunday afternoon at Arizona State (5-8, 1-1 Pac-10). The match starts at 1 p.m. PST.
