Gardner-Webb at Buffalo

Postby Tyrion » Thu Dec 17, 2015 8:49 pm

On Friday, December 11th Buffalo hosted Gardner-Webb for its first home dual of the year. Gardner-Webb is a solid team. A nice showing for Buffalo, winning 8 of 10 individual matches and the team scoring by 30-6.

As you might expect from the team score, there were lots of close competitive matches. Buffalo carried the dual by winning four of five matches decided by 2 or 1 point(s). Good indication of progress, as Gardner-Webb (with much the same lineup) beat Buffalo (with a much different lineup) last year 33-6.

Of note: Tyler Rill (165) and Joe Ariola (184) won against solid opponents. Leading at the time, Rill defeated Austin Trott by defensive fall. Ariola controlled his match against then #27 (now #32) Hunter Gamble winning by major 11-2.

Buffalo's James Benjamin (197) continues to wrestle tough in duals. His 4-4 dual record is deceiving, with losses against Phil Sprenkle, Lock Haven (8-6); #8 Jake Smith, West Virginia (9-8); #15 Anthony Abro, Eastern Michigan (4-3); and Kyle Conel , Kent State (9-8 SV). In the Kent State match, Conel was seriously gassed when Benjamin was docked a point on a questionable "leading with the head" call. Benjamin lost each of these matches in the last seconds. Interesting wrestler to watch going forward.

A couple of nice articles on the Buffalo Wrestling (http://www.ubbulls.com/sports/wrest/201 ... 1211wn9pka) and BullRun (http://www.ubbullrun.com/wrestling/2015 ... -dual-30-6) sites.

The dual is also archived on ESPN (http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index/_/id ... -wrestling).
