ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Arthur Bunce won the Joe Parisi Lindenwood Open at the heavyweight weight class on Saturday night to lead another successful day of open tournament wrestling for the Northern Illinois University wrestling team.

Bunce (Munith, Mich./Dansville) won the second open tournament of his collegiate wrestling career, previously haven won the Harper Open on Feb. 2, 2013. The redshirt senior won all five of his match, including two victories via first-period pins, on his way to the individual heavyweight title at the annual tournament hosted by Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo.

Five other Huskies joined Bunce on the podiums at the Lindenwood Open while facing some of the top competition from Division I, Division II and Division III of collegiate wrestling. In a tournament with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Arizona State, West Virginia and numerous others, Quinton Rosser (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) and Shaun’Qae McMurtry (Lockport, Ill./Nebraska) placed fourth and fifth at 184 and 165 pounds, respectively, in the top Gold Division. Meanwhile, three other Huskies also placed in the freshman and sophomore Black Division as Caden McWhirter (Prattville, Ala./Prattville) finished third at 157 pounds, Zack Benkovich (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) took fourth at 184 pounds and McCoy Kent (Modesto, Calif./Enochs) placed fifth at 141 pounds.

NIU wrestling head coach Ryan Ludwig was proud the way one of his senior Bunce led the way at Lindenwood and believes the week off at home will help the team in preparation for the upcoming dual season, which begins on Dec. 3 against Central Michigan.

“Arthur Bunce wrestled a great tournament and brought home the title. I was proud of the way he competed and pressed the action in the top position,” Ludwig said. “We have technical details to sure up for our upcoming dual on December 3rd. The guys are going to benefit from being off the road for a week to train and get focused.”

NIU’s two top-10 ranked wrestlers Steve Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) and Shawn Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly) both won their opening two matches before dropping the next two to finish the day 2-2.

In total, 16 Huskies won multiple matches on Saturday as the NIU wrestling team took the mats for the final time this November to wrap up a busy month of weekend open tournaments.
