Wellington Takes 197 Crown at Michigan State Open
Kelly, Reese and Webb Win Respective Freshman/Sophomore Divisions

ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio senior Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) continued his strong start to the wrestling season by claiming first place at 197-pounds at the Michigan State Open at the Jenison Field House in East Lancing, Mich.

Freshmen Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) and Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio), along with sophomore Jesse Webb (Bennington, Vt.) each won their respective divisions in the freshman/sophomore division.

“Our goal is to get better each week,” said head coach Joel Greenlee. “I thought we improved from last week to this week. It was nice to see some of our younger guys win their tournaments.”

Ohio Top-5 Open Finishes

Wellington won the 197 title by defeating Northern Illinois’ Shawn Scott in a 7-6 decision in the final match of the day. He began the tournament by defeating Rylen Droscha by technical fall at 18-2. He also defeated Ohio State’s Kollin Moore in the 197 semifinals with a 7-4 decision.

Senior Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) placed third at 157-pounds by defeating Wisconsin’s TJ Ruschell in a 3-2 decision in the third-place match. Chino won his first two matches over Bucknell’s Logan Kerin (6-5 decision) and Wisconsin’s Santonio Cathery (8-0 major decision) before being defeated by Missouri’s Joseph LaVallee 3-2 in a hard-fought match.

Sophomore Noah Forrider (Maryville, Ohio) claimed fifth place at 141-pounds with a 2-1 decision over Purdue’s Kyle Ayersman. He opened the tournament with a 5-0 victory over Ohio State’s Mike Hozan.

Freshman/Sophomore Highlights

Kelly claimed the 133-pound crown in the freshman/sophomore division with a 5-3 decision over Ohio State’s Jose Rodriguez. The freshman posted five victories on the day, including a 21-6 technical fall victory over Ashland’s Chandler Minnard.

Reese took home first place at 165-pounds with a thrilling 7-6 overtime decision over Navy’s Michael Coleman. He also pinned Ohio State’s JP Newtown just 1:50 in his second-round match.

Webb won the heavyweight title with a 6-1 decision over Purdue’s James Ford. The sophomore posted back-to-back victories via falls, pinning Eastern Michigan’s George Lahar in 4:11 and Davenport’s Manny Haddad in 2:10 in rounds two and three.
