11/15/15 Nine Huskies Place at the Michigan State Open

Nov. 15, 2015

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Steve Bleise of the Northern Illinois University wrestling team continued his perfect start to the 2015-16 season by winning the Michigan State Open at 141 pounds on Sunday at Jenison Field House in East Lansing, Mich.

Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) defeated two top-15 ranked wrestlers – No. 13 Danny Sabatello of Purdue and No. 14 Zach Horan of Central Michigan – in his weight class on his way to claiming first place. The NIU redshirt freshman, who was ranked as high as No. 15 at 141 pounds this week by Flowrestling, improved to 9-0 on the season with five total wins on Sunday.

And Bleise was far from the only Huskie to have his hand raised in victory several times at the Michigan State Open. Five NIU wrestlers, including No. 11 Shawn Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly) and his runners-up effort at 197 pounds, finished as placewinners in their weight classes in the top open tournament at MSU, while four other Huskies placed top eight in the freshman/sophomore tournament.

“Steve really went after what he wanted, and it was great to see him rewarded with a championship,” NIU wrestling head coach Ryan Ludwig said on Sunday evening. “And Shawn closed the gap on his finals opponent, and he continues to be a strong leader for this squad.”

Bleise and Scott entered the day as NIU’s two ranked wrestlers and further earned that national respect by both making the finals with wins over ranked wrestlers along the way. Scott defeated No. 20 Drake Stein of Purdue before dropping a 7-6 decision to No. 7 Phil Wellington of Ohio in the 197-pound final.

Meanwhile, other Michigan natives also excelled in their home state for the Huskies on Sunday. Austin Eicher (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) went on a great run that included his pin of Bucknell’s No. 20-ranked Grimaldi Gonzalez to claim fourth place at 133 pounds, heavyweight Arthur Bunce (Munith, Mich./Munith) placed sixth at heavyweight and Trace Engelkes (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) also took seventh at 174 pounds to complete the quintuplet of Huskies that placed in the Michigan State Open’s top brackets.

NIU wrestling also saw four Huskies in the Michigan State Open freshman and sophomore tournament battle for their spots on the podium. Michael Aldrich (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) claimed fourth at 184 pounds, Angel Velasquez (Modesto, Calif./John H. Pitman) earned fifth at 125 pounds in his collegiate debut, and McCoy Kent (Modesto, Calif./Enochs) and Luke Greenberg (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) both took seventh place at 133 and 197 pounds, respectively.

That depth displayed by the NIU wrestling program impressed Coach Ludwig, who noted that now that the team has experienced success this season, the Huskies must strive for even better going forward.

“We continue to emphasize an attacking mindset, and the guys are all in. We need to keep that fire lit for the entire season,” Ludwig said. “We are certainly improving every week and making gains. Of course there are technical areas to sharpen, but that will always be the case.”

In total, all 20 Huskies that competed on Sunday at the Michigan State Open won at least one match, while 15 NIU wrestlers picked up at least two victories on a very busy and long day of wrestling.
