SEASON PREVIEW: Wrestling Team Set for Opener

BLOOMSBURG-- When the Bloomsburg University wrestling team hits the mats for real on November 6th a familiar face will be there guiding the Huskies. Marcus Gordon, who spent the last three years as the assistant coach, begins his first year as the Huskies new head coach.

Bloomsburg will open the season on Sunday hosting Davidson and Keystone in a tri-match. Davidson will face Keystone at noon and Bloomsburg at 2 p.m. followed by Bloomsburg wrestling Keystone at 4 p.m.

"I'm really excited about the opportunity to move this program forward," said Gordon. "Being here for three years I'm happy for the chance to keep working with some of the younger guys we have on our roster. We're young, but extremely talented. People are going to see improvement this year and we're going to fight hard for seven minutes in every match"

The Huskies won just one match a year ago as they battled injuries at nearly every weight class. This year, though, Gordon feels his young team is ready to compete.

"Last year was a long year and we're still going to start seven or eight red-shirt freshmen," Gordon commented. "Our guys have had a year to grow and get stronger and understand what it takes to win at the Division I level. "They've shown that they want to work hard in the wrestling room and that will be seen in our matches this year".

Despite being young up and down the lineup, Gordon feels his team does have a strength.

"We'll be tough in the middle weights," Gordon said. "We're going to be all sophomores or red-shirt freshmen, but the guys we have there have all put in the time and work necessary to get better."

The strength of the lineup will be tested this season with a challenging schedule.

"We have a tough schedule, for sure, with three Big 10 teams in the first month," said Gordon. "Our guys are all excited. The Big 10 is the premier conference in wrestling and we're looking forward to the challenge of competing against those teams."

Bloomsburg will also host the EWL Championships in March.

"I think we have a few guys who could place this year at EWL's," Gordon continued. "(Brendon) Colbert certainly has a chance to get to NCAA's, as do some others. Overall, I think we're going to have a few place winners this year. We're definitely going to surprise some people."

LINEUP BY WEIGHT

125—Will Girard and Derek Wilson (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern ) will both be competing for time. Girard went 136-33 in his high school career and Wilson was 114-32.

133-Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) and Matt Noble (Bridgewater, NJ/DePaul Catholic (NJ)) will battle here. Schutz is a true senior who posted 19 wins last year and Noble is coming off a red-shirt year during which he went 6-8.

141-Grant Bond (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) and John Barber (Buford, Ga/Buford) will compete here. Bond is coming off a red-shirt season during which he was injured, while Barber is a true freshman who was three-time Georgia State champion.

149- Kevin Laubach (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) and Nate Newberry (Bigleville, Pa./Biglerville) are holding down this weight class. Laubach red-shirted a year ago, while Newberry is true freshman who was 146-26 as a high school wrestler.

157-Brendon Colbert (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) will get the nod here after placing fourth as a freshman at EWL's and winning 17 matches.

165-Reid Stanley (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale), a true freshmn, will likely get the nod here. Stanley won 210 matches in high school dropping just 17.

174-Trevor Allard (Mexico, NY/Mexico) and Casey Glunt (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) will fight for time on the mat. As a red-shirt in 2015-16 Allard won 17 matches and lost 12, while Glunt competed as a true freshman last year.

184-Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) and Tyler Worthing (New Kensington, Pa/Kiski Area) compete here for mat time. Two true freshmen will see action here. Murphy went 125-22 in high school, while Worthing was 90-16 as a high school wrestler.

197-Dominic Carfagno (West Paterson, NJ/St. Joseph Regional) will start at this weight. He led the Huskies in wins last year going 21-19.

285—Bo Spiller (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco), Saul Wilkins (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR) and Bruce Graeber (Featerville, Pa./Neshaminy) give the Huskies good depth here. Spiller red-shirted as a freshman, while Wilkins competed as an undersized heavyweight. Greaber, who was 128-34 in high school, will likely red-shirt this season.

Very young but a lot of potential I would imagine there will be a couple guys emerge as good college wrestlers from the group.

Great. Should help with confidence. We need to turn this thing around. The History and Tradition of Bloomsburg Wrestling must continue. We need to get back on the map again. We need to develop the current team and keep them in school and on the team and recruit recruit recruit.

Several of us made the 150 mile trip to see the Huskies wrestle. Were pleased with what we saw. Competition level skyrockets next weekend with a trip to the Boilermaker Duals. Wonder who the yet to be named assistant coach will be??

Who is in the running for the assistant coach? Also will there be any volunteer or student assistant?
