Clarion University’s NCAA Division I Wrestling has a busy weekend planned in Eastern Wrestling League action as the Golden Eagles travel to #9 Pitt on Friday and then on the road to Morgantown, W.V. to battle the Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon.


Clarion will battle Pitt on Friday at 7pm at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse, while the match at West Virginia’s Coliseum gets underway Sunday at 2pm. Both dual meets will air on C-93 (92.7; WCCR-FM) in Clarion and on the internet at redzonemedia.com with Rich Herman doing the play by play.


The Golden Eagles, under first year head coach Matt Dernlan, are 1-4 on the season in dual meet action. Clarion opened the year traveling to Lehigh and losing 27-12 to #8 Lehigh and 34-13 to #7 Illinois, then lost its home opener 37-12 to #21 Edinboro. Last weekend Clarion defeated Indiana Tech 46-3 and lost 25-12 to Eastern Michigan at the EMU Duals.


Clarion’s lineup this weekend will likely be Trey Hicks (5-12; Jr. Amityville, N.Y.) at 125; Joe Waltko (11-10; Jr. Allison Park, Pa.) at 133; Tyler Bedelyon (11-11; So. Lewistown) at 141; Cameron Moran (9-11, Sr. James City) at 149; #6 James Fleming (16-2; Jr. West Mifflin) at 157; #5 Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (20-4, Sr. Tashkent, Uzbekistan) at 165; Ryan Darch (8-11, Fr. Batavia, N.Y.) or Nick Milano (5-9, So. Erie) at 174; Steven Cressley (11-8; Jr. Punxsutawney) at 184; Alex Thomas (17-11; Jr. Seaford, De.) at 197 and Quintas McCorkle (17-9, Sr. Alexandria, Va.) at hwt.


#9 rated Pitt enters Friday’s matchup under veteran head coach Rande Stottlemyer (33rd year) with a 10-1 dual meet record. The Panthers have been impressive with big wins over Lehigh (18-16), Michigan (19-13), Eastern Michigan (22-15), Lock Haven (27-9) and Bloomsburg (30-3).


The Panther lineup will feature 4 ranked wrestlers – the lineup will be #13 Anthony Zanetta (22-2) at 125; #17 Shelton Mack (14-6) at 133, Travis Shaffer (15-10) at 141, #10 Tyler Nauman (20-4) at 149, Donnie Tasser (9-8) at 157, Tyler Wilps (13-8) at 165, Ethan Headlee (9-6) at 174, Andy Vaughn (15-5) or Karl DeCiantis (7-4) at 184, #3 Matt Wilps (23-2) at 197 and Joel Yahner (6-16) at heavyweight.


West Virginia, led by former Clarion wrestler Craig Turnbull who is in his 34th season at the helm of the Mountaineers, has a 3-2 dual meet record heading into the weekend. West Virginia opened the season with wins against Johns Hopkins (48-0) and Franklin & Marshall (41-0), lost to Penn State (34-6) and Maryland (22-15), before defeating Michigan State last weekend 23-12.


WVU will enter the dual against Clarion with 4 ranked wrestlers – the lineup will likely be #18 Shane Young (15-3) at 125, Nathan Pennesi (19-5) at 133, Michael Morales (2-0) at 141, Brutus Scheffel (15-9) at 149, Dominic Prezzia (13-9) at 157, Kyle Eason (13-9) at 165, #19 Lance Bryson (17-8) at 174, #20 Matt Ryan (9-3) at 184, Mac Mancuso (14-6) at 197 and #18 Brandon Williamson (15-6) at heavyweight.


CLARION NOTES: Clarion lost 32-9 to Pitt last year at W.S. Tippin Gym … Clarion lost two years ago 28-8 at Pitt ... Pitt leads Clarion 17-16-2 in EWL head to head matches, while the overall series is tied 20-20-2 ... Clarion's last win against Pitt came in the 2001 season by a 32-5 score... Pitt has won 10 straight since 2001 ... In the series against WVU --- WVU won last year 39-4 at Tippin Gym – two years ago in Morgantown, Clarion defeated WVU 20-14 … the Eagles last win against WVU before 2010 was in 2001 – a 27-10 victory … Clarion is 14-17-2 in EWL matches wrestled all-time against WVU, and 14-18-2 in the history between the two schools ... Clarion’s next matches will be on Friday, Feb. 3 at Bloomsburg (7pm) and on Saturday Feb. 4 at Ohio University at 7pm.
