Southern Scuffle Entries

Postby JM » Fri Dec 15, 2017 11:50 am

Penn State and Northern Iowa appear to be Lehigh's most formidable opponents in the Southern Scuffle tournament over the holidays.

Preliminary list of entries for each weight class can be found at

What happened to Ohio St., Oklahoma St., Michigan and N.C. St. - all of whom were supposed to be participating?

>>>>>>I believe those teams plan to send backups/redshirt to the Scuffle, similar to Lehigh's recent entries at the Midlands.
Not as strong a tourney as recent years but still a strong two day test.

If Jake and/or Weiler place high they can vault over a handful of guys ranked in the 10-20 range.

Wood could have a match with Hofstra that would have EIWA seeding implications.

It's a great time to be a Lehigh wrestling fan.

flo just lists the (assumed) 10 Lehigh starters. How many extra guys can go?

LU has a lot of good wrestlers besides the 10 listed. Pomrinca, Walter and Weiler come to mind, but several others as well.

Lehigh's contingent could change based on injuries. I see minimal gain for Preisch, Parker or any other veteran who might be less than 100% to make the trip.

One definite Scuffle plus is it's ability to help determine the starter at 149,165 & 197.

It's a great time to be a Lehigh wrestling fan.

Midlands Entries

Postby WallyCKP » Fri Dec 15, 2017 3:11 pm

My bad - I missed the bottom of Dave's email: Soph Joe Lobeck will join a group of redshirting freshman entries at Evanston Dec 29-30. Also, Price and Colucci will enter either Midlands or SS, to be determined later; Cole Walter will rest up for 2nd semester after a series of hurdles experienced since October, the most recent his Dec 8 broken nose

Farro at 125.....as has been previously stated, if he can hold this weight next year he will be a very tough out. He's on the shorter side for 133 but will be an absolute monster at 125.

I have been assuming that if healthy Lobeck, Paetzel, and Gentile our red-shirting second years would be going to Midlands, along with with whatever red-shirting frosh (M Parker, Hoffman, Moran, ????. I believe to actually send coaches we need non redshirts say, Pipa, Fischer, Sell, Murray, Gallick??

-------------------------------

I can't say I have worked out the math, but at SS, were we to field Preisch, and PSU, to not field Keener, or Vincenzo, we might be favored. 3 weights were the Lions likely would not place, and us having a good shot at a place winner. Dunn was 2-2 last year at the Scuffle, so it is far from impossible that we will sneak in at least a low place between Price+Dunn. Of course we know not the status of PSU's two missing guys. Could the Nits field two defending National Champs at the same weight.

I am hoping for a bigger Lehigh roster at the Middle America Meat Grinder. I will be out that way for Midlands not since Burley. See is out at Hoffman Estates, Il this year, not Evanston.

Really upsetting to not see Preisch listed as an entry. Hoping the injury isn't as bad as it looked when they carried him off the mat.

And again I apologize for incorrectly paraphrasing w/out re-checking Dave's wording:

Midlands
Redshirts – unattached

That means a pantload of redshirting guys both freshmen and upperclass will go to Evanston.
Let's not forget that there are often some last-minute MIAs that were *projected* not guaranteed to be there.

Preisch will be back, just not in time for SS. He didn't break anything

Ok State & NC State: dual in Naples, Italy (5-Jan), likely to send backups to Scuffle.
tOSU & Mich: typically send RS and backups to Scuffle.

Michigan sent its full team and placed 5th at the 2015 Scuffle.
They sent redshirts for 2016 and didn't go anywhere last year.

According to this article on FLO, the Cowboys are sending some formidable backups to the Scuffle. Would be interesting to watch a Cruz-Fix matchup (significant age difference, but Fix has far more experience than the average teen).

Oklahoma State won't be taking its starters to the 2018 Southern Scuffle, unlike the No. 4-ranked Cowboys have done in most recent years. However, the collection of redshirts and backups that OSU coach John Smith is sending to Chattanooga, TN, on Jan. 1-2 is as tough a group of non-starters as you'll find.

Here's a rundown of the Cowboys' Scuffle entries below.

125 - Daton Fix

The UWW junior freestyle world champ made his NCAA debut at the Reno Tournament of Champions a couple weeks ago. The true freshman announced his presence with authority by winning the 125-pound bracket. Fix won consecutive 2-1 decisions over NCAA qualifiers Ronnie Bresser and Sean Fausz in the semis and finals, respectively.

Still competing unattached, Fix will likely have an even tougher test in his second NCAA tournament, as reigning NCAA 125-pound champion Darian Cruz is expected to be his bracket.

133 - Gary Wayne Harding

Harding qualified for the 2016 NCAA tournament before missing almost all of the 2016-17 season. Harding has had mixed results since returning to action this season, although his performance at the Reno TOC was encouraging. There, Harding went 5-1 before having to bow out of the fifth-place match due to daily match limitations.

141 - Kaden Gfeller

The second-most hyped true freshman on the Cowboys roster behind Fix, Gfeller has been showing off his blue-chip credentials while wrestling unattached this season. Gfeller is 11-4 on the year, with his only losses coming to All-Americans — Jaydin Eierman twice, Kevin Jack, and Dean Heil.

141 - Mike Magaldo

New Jersey native Mike Magaldo has shown plenty of promise for the Cowboys. Unfortunately, he has so far been unable to crack the lineup thanks to Oklahoma State's lightweights.

149 - Tristan Moran

Moran is another talented Cowboy who has been unable to find his way onto the postseason starting lineup. Moran still has plenty of quality wins on his resume, including a pin over All-American Tommy Thorn at last season's Scuffle.

165 - Joseph Smith

We haven't seen much of the two-time All-American this season, so an opportunity to catch Smith against a bracket that could include Vincenzo Joseph, Chance Marsteller, and many more is not to be missed.

Smith did not wrestle with his fellow Cowboys redshirts at the most recent Reno TOC, but he did finish second at last season's Scuffle. He later placed fourth at the NCAAs, his second appearance on the podium in as many tries.

184 - Andrew Marsden

Marsden has performed admirably for OK State this year, filling in for the injured Preston Weigel up at 197 pounds. Marsden suffered only four defeats this season, all to top 20 197-pounders. He also owns a win over No. 20 Jake Jakobsen from the Journeymen Classic. With Weigel back in the lineup, Marsden will look to do some damage down at 184.

285 - Blake Andrews

Senior Blake Andrews may never get a chance to qualify for the NCAAs with Derek White having firmly established himself as the Cowboys' starting heavyweight. However, the 12-3 Texas native and junior college champion is a great insurance policy for coach Smith. The rest of the 285-pound field in Chattanooga would be wise not to treat Andrews like a typical backup.
