Wilkes Open, Dec. 22nd

Postby JDALU75 » Wed Dec 13, 2017 3:36 pm

Lehigh has 15 entrants right now: http://register.gimpsoftware.com/Report ... lege21.htm

A lot of the usual suspects, with one entrant I find interesting: Kent Lane, at 149. Remains to be seen if he can make it down; he was at 157 all last year.

**** Besides Lane to 149, Paetzell down to 125, and Moran down to 133. Also Wolf going at 165 Attached, maybe just to keep ready and keep weight down for SScuffle.

I would like to think that Price going at 184 means either Preisch is (al)right or Weiler will make 184 (or both).

Or maybe 184 is just Price's weight. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I know "it's what we do' as fans but I'm not sure what Wilkes on Dec. 22 has to do with 184. Except whether Price wants to re-instate his former position as Preisch's back-up. Why was Dunn Option 1 for Drexel vs. Price? I doubt we're gonna' know -- unless somebody asks at the next Coaches' lunch. Could have been overweight; could have been ill or dinged; could have lost a wrestle-off?
Only things that matter are what goes on going forward. Price will want to make a statement, regardless, for now; I had thought he was The Man backing up Ryan.
All of us who wanted to know if Kent could make 149 should have an answer soon; that and 165 clearly seem to be the most significant weights at Wilkes, with Lane w/out a doubt making a bid for a starting 2nd semester spot; the coaches have publicly declared the Scuffle to be a crucial step at several weights.
Likewise, recent MIA Longo needs to match up well with GFW in Wilkes, possibly a finals w-off, in order to keep pace with the two guys who'd been briefly ranked at 165 ... I'm still surprised at how low-scoring the w-off was between Longo-Gordo, but what do I know?
What I know is that this might be the most interesting Wilkes in awhile, not that the tourney has been all that top notch lately.

Lehigh should roll thru a lot of the weights at Wilkes, a D1 wrestler is a D1 wrestler but looking over the listing of schools and a quick study of names doesn't show me a lot of competition that should prevent Lehigh from rolling 1 guy at least into most of the finals......

Some guys to watch from my viewpoint (other than Mountain Hawks or Engineers.... your choice):

Three guys from Binghamton to keep an eye on are Heberlein (141), Kropman (149) and Deprez (184), all redshirting I believe.....Heberlein and Kropman are going to be good steady winning D1 wrestlers (my guess both slip into high end of rankings eventually).... Kropman had the pleasure of going up against Yianni on a continual basis in high school which kept him from a much more storied career than he should have ended up with.....Heberlein is just fun to watch and has had success at national tournaments as well as being a two or three time NYS champion (D2)..........Deprez in my opinion will eventually be a top 5 ranking kind of guy (and no I don't think that's a stretch given his pedigree).

Christian Dietrich for University at Buffalo was a top 50 high school prospect coming out (Wyoming Seminary), went to Pitt for a year and then transferred. He is registered at 174 which is interesting because that is the lightest I've seen him wrestle since his freshman year in high school when he was runnerup at NYS state championships at 170 lbs (lost 4-3) , his sophomore year he won NYS championship at 182 and then transferred to Wyoming Seminary where he was runner up at Prep championships at 182 (to big time recruit Michael Beard 3-0 from Malvern).....

I'm sure there are some quality redshirt/backup wrestlers from Rutgers, Drexel, Princeton, Campbell, Rider etc..... but none that I would think would be a huge obstacle for guys who are part time "starters" or perceived as high quality backups for Lehigh.

Excellent background on the New York state wrestlers as usual from Spladle. The Maine squad appears to be a good club team (http://bangordailynews.com/2017/03/15/s ... mpionship/).

Glad to see Joe Lobeck back in action and Matt Parker will get to compete vs some solid starters, including his fellow red shirt, team-mate and ex-starter. There are some tough guys in the field and some dramatic storylines for the Lehigh guys competing for a starting role. It looks like a good one...

By the way Binghamton head coach just resigned, no official announcement as to why but a lot of rumors (he has been removed from website and former assistant now listed as "acting" head wrestling coach).

Tough for Binghamton as he had a good thing going there with a nice team shaping up for the next few years with some very high quality recruits as mentioned above.

Quote below is from the Binghamton forum. Too bad.

"Former PSU assistant Matt Dernlan resigned today from Binghamton. Tough day for me and most all of the wrestlers.
Can't really go into specifics, but will say that the p&%sification of America continues and our education system continues to be spineless in the face of helicopter parents."

U of Maine, Orono; NCWA Div II

Gimp will have to explain how they could be both; do the Clubs have separate divisions for their nationals?

Both what? NCWA does have two divisions though. IIRC one division is for schools without NCAA/NAIA and the other is for schools with. Lehigh/PSU are in the NCWA.

Looks like things have changed in the last several years. I remember that it was a consideration and still looks like it has a major effect. Offhand, the main ones in D1 with teams that I see quickly seem to be Liberty and Queens. But they are relatively recent "upgrades" from club programs. Liberty jumped back and forth.
Article 1.5 -- MEMBERSHIP CLASSIFICATIONS
Full NCWA Membership Classifications:
-- Division-1 - Teams - D1 status as determined by the Quality Enhancement Director (QED)
-- Division-2 - Emerging Programs -- Programs that are moving toward D1 status

I believe in looking at the list that this evolved from the original and most schools maintained their old status.
