Some very familiar names in this Mat Town tourney a generation or so ago. Thanks to PA historian extraordinaire, Tom Elling, for the photo!

Tanxs, JM for providing the link, but I'm unable to see that photo... something about "logging in."
What good is it to not be able to see said photo, unless you become a member of Facebook... of which I'm not a fan of, by the way.
(Jus' sayin'... :? )
I guess it was a good photo.

Sorry, D3 !! Did not realize you had to be a member of FB to see the photo and article. I am only able to post the url, not the article itself.

Jim Frick, not Mike. Brother to Mike, albeit large age differential.

I figured that's who you were referring to (Jim), and yes, there's quite an age difference, indeed.
And Lock Haven's Jeff Karam... father of present day RS Frosh, Luke Karam.

I'm on the same page as you D3, I am neither a fan nor a member of Facebook. Glad to know I'm not the only one ... Anyway, since the title of this thread is YESTERYEAR I want to relate the following: Yesterday, at our favorite breakfast spot in North Conway, NH, after a bit of friendly conversation with our waitress she told us she was from Sayville, NY. So I asked her if she knew any outstanding HS wrestlers from Sayville. Her eyes lit up as she exclaimed "PETER YOZZO, my father was his coach!" What a small world.

**** This would have been the 82-83 season. I was there. I remember getting up very early (about 6:15) Saturday morning and looked at the Morning Call and there was an article on the Mat Town Tournament. The tournament was scheduled to start at 9:00 am. I decided to drive to Lock Haven. I had my dog with me, which I would have to take to my parents house prior to leaving.

I finally got on the road around 7:00. I figured it would take about 2 1/2 hours (170 miles). Traffic was fairly light on 22 then 33. I got on 80 going west and about 5 miles in, there was as speed trap with about 10-15 state police cars. They had many cars pulled over. Luckily I did not get pulled over. Once past the stop, I was behind a big Cadillac. I was in my Mazda RX7. We had the same thought, if there are 10-15 Staties at the speed trap, it was unlikely there are any police up ahead. The Caddy took off and so did I. I stayed about 1/4 mile behind him and for the next hour we did 100 mph. We were correct, no police around. I arrived about 8:55 in Lock Haven and was at the tournament for the opening ceremonies. Not bad 170 miles in 1 hour and 55 minutes. A great day.

The match between Yozzo and Kreiger was excellent. Kreiger was lanky and traditional takedown wrestler who was good on top. Yozzo tried to use his upper body moves. Additionally I seem to remember Bill Hyman (NCAA Champ) beat Bernie Brown 4-3 in the semis.

Fall 83 to spring 87.

Mat Town was then a December event. We were there all 4 Yozzo years. He was runnerup as FR and Sr, Champ So+Jr. -- Senior he lost to Krieger ISU 4-4 Crit at 150 (dropped to 142 5 days later for Iowa dual.)

pretty sure it was Yozzo's senior year, the 86-87 season. but whatever, not the point, some great matches listed on this thread.

trivia on his opponent-Krieger was 4 time #1 seed at NCAA tournament. Only career losses happened at NCAAs (placed 5th, 1st, 2nd, 1st)
