Michigan Comiing 11/19

Postby trimanmatfan » Sat Nov 11, 2017 7:10 am

Michigan forfeited 2 bouts against Arizona State last night but still won 21-18. They no showed at 125 and injury defaulted at 149. According to the Michigan site, the 125 forfeit was due to "a nagging injury and two true freshmen presently being on redshirt."

6-4 split. Forfeit @ 125 and the injury default only made the final tally seemed close.

Valencia Bros split their results, "W" for Zahid, "L" for Anthony.
Three bonus point wins for the Wolverines... they pretty much controlled that dual.

Most guys who go 1-2 at the MSU Open are not going to crack a D1 lineup, regardless of whether they previously won an NCAA title 4 years ago.

Keep in mind that one of those two losses was to an ASU guy NOT named Shields. That makes Tsirtsis the third best 157 in the ASU room.

Or the best with HEW. He lost a sister to a tragic car accident in past 2 years. Has not really been the same since.

Personally, I believe there are 4 tossup matches between Lehigh and Michigan.
Unfortunately, I believe Michigan is favored in 5 of the other 6 matches.
However, a boisterous Grace Hall crowd could deliver a LEHIGH upset.
I hope that my fellow fans will join this 68 year old alumnus in making noise
for our team.

The Michigan site is showing Assad ("Nagging injury") or true freshmen Mattin or Medley at 125, Amine (injured over the weekend) at 149 and Beazley or Striggow at 197. Maybe a fair chance for a win at that weight if it's Striggow.

Odds are 3-to-1 (IMH) they'll mat Mattin. This dual means a ton to them; unlike our place in the standings a must-win.

With all due respect to Beazley, who's struggled in w-offs with Striggow, we have a fair chance if he goes. He beat two non-seeds at NCAAs plus an upset vs. Nebraska's Studebaker, whom Bolich once beat at J-man. Weiler had a win last yr vs. CMU's Ellingwood (184) who's been Top 7 this yr.

In reality, a non-conference dual doesn't mean all that much to them. Their dual performance is more geared toward the B1G schedule. For this dual, they are more concerned with individual match ups - for seeding purposes in March. I'd be surprised if they pull Mattin's shirt prior to the holiday tournaments.

>>>>>>>>I think Mich approaches this match as a good early season test, but not in the same light as a B1G dual.

I believe Lehigh has more to gain as Mich has higher ranked guys at 6 weights ( 133, and 157 thru 285). Regardless of the team score, individual Lehigh guys can make a statement and climb the rankings ladder with upset wins.

Similar situation when Lehigh faces psu----- opportunities for upset wins at most weights.

Edinboro's guys, on the other hand, can make statements by knocking off Lehigh at a number of weights.

Lastly, imho, if Kutler and Preisch are still ranked in fringe AA territory after the Mich and psu matches, it's a strong indication that they should be down a weight.

Some excellent wrestling coming our way.

2017 NCAA champ Darian Cruz. It's a great time to be a Lehigh wrestling fan.

MH not sure he follows. You're kind of assuming "down a weight" is possible, but if they are in A/A territory (both had nice A/A type wins last weekend) at present weights, why bother going down? Down might produce a worse wrestler compromised by the cut. MH was thinking if they are proven lacking horsepower at these weights (hard to fathom this looking at these two guys) that maybe they should consider dropping (your same thought maybe?), but MH not really willing to dance with that devil considering what happened at EIWAs. IF they do both come down then MH is pretty sure they are eliminating any possibility of last year's problem from entering the equation. Kinda like to see them up and full-go on the gas tank.

I agree with Wally on Mattin but not necessarily for the same reason. Why redshirt Mattin when your regular 125 (who's not highly ranked to begin with) has a "nagging injury", Mattin beat him in the wrestleoffs, Mattin beat two Top 12 kids over the weekend, and they have their best team in a long time and are in position to finish very high in the National Tournament? He's shown that he's top tier now and it's likely he'll even improve if he has an entire season against top competition. Somewhat like Penn State's situation with Suriano last year when they put him in their starting lineup as a true frosh and he did quite well, thank you.

Upon further posting, nice to agree with both MH and triman

Michigan has waited 13 years for a Top 4 team and cannot afford to lose any Duals; they’re totally used to losing B1G duals but not that non- league; in fact there’s anecdotal evidence that they took some off in the series to protect their W/L; “not that’s any thing wrong with that”; a big time program again, they’ll pull out all the stops within reason; agree with triman ; Mattin was likely regardless and benefits from facing after beating Russell by wider margin than Darian has in 5 bouts

Mattin submitted his registration for the Lindenwood Open on 12-November. The tourney will take place Saturday. Again, it makes no sense for UM to pull his shirt until they are certain of the decision to do so. Mid-November is WAAAY too early to make such a move.
