More on the Scuffle
• This will be NAVY’s 14th overall appearance at the Southern Scuffle and fourth under head coach Joel Sharratt.
• NAVY’s best finish at the tournament was in its debut in 2004 when the Midshipmen placed third out of 23 teams. Its best finish under Sharratt was a 17th-place showing (out of 31 teams) in 2016.
• Last season, the Mids placed 19th among the 23 teams who competed.
• Two Mids have claimed Southern Scuffle individual titles - 141-pound Nate Gulosh in 2004 and heavyweight Ed Prendergast in 2007.
• Five teams have accounted for the team title in the last 13 years the tournament has been held - Minnesota (2004-05-07), Missouri (2006), Cornell (2008-09-10), Penn State (2011-12-13-14-15-16) and Oklahoma State (2017).
• Representatives from eight teams who finished in the top 25 at last year’s NCAA Tournament are making their way to Chattanooga for the New Year’s event. Individually, there could be as many as seven individual NCAA Champions on the mat. Over 70 of the competitors qualified for last year’s NCAA Tournament, while 20 were All-Americans.
• Teams competing at this year’s Southern Scuffle include (*denotes partial team participation): Air Force, Appalachian State, Cal State Bakersfield, Campbell, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Cleveland State, Drexel, Duke, Gardner-Webb, George Mason, Hofstra, Lehigh, Lock Haven, Navy, North Carolina*, NC State*, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Stanford, Utah Valley, Virginia, Virginia Tech*

NAVY Notes
• All three of NAVY’s ranked wrestlers will be in action this weekend at the Southern Scuffle, including sophomore 141-pound Jared Prince (No. 11) who will be making his first appearance of the season. He will be joined by No. 8 Jadaen Bernstein (174) and No. 17 Michael Coleman (184).
• After eclipsing the 100-win milestone at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in early December, Bernstein continues his march up the the NAVY wins leader board. He enters the Scuffle tied for 13th on the all-time wins list with 101, needed one win to tie Luke Rebertus (2009-12) for 12th. He stands just seven wins outside of the top ten (108 by Peyton Walsh, 2012-15).
• As previously mentioned, 2017 NCAA qualifier Jared Prince is expected to make his season debut after nursing an injury the first two months of the season. Ranked 11th at 141 pounds, Prince put together a 27-9 record a year ago, including a 20-9 mark in tournament action.
• While Prince has been sidelined, junior Nicholas Gil has filled in nicely. A 2016 NCAA qualifier, Gil has won two individual titles at 141 pounds this season and owns a 14-2 record.
• Eastern Michigan Open champion and Navy Classic runner-up Michael Coleman enters the Scuffle with a 13-3 record and a #17 national ranking. Two of Coleman’s three losses have been to opponents ranked among the nation’s top 10.
• Senior Drew Daniels will put his undefeated record on the line when he takes the mat at 165 pounds this week. He owns an 11-0 record, winning individual titles at the Eastern Michigan Open and Navy Classic.
• Bernstein’s classmate 157-pound Zack Davis is inching closer to the 100-win milestone. Davis has amassed an 88-45 record over three-plus seasons and stands 12-4 this year.

At 141 FLO says

Two unattached wrestlers help prop up a 141-pound weight class that otherwise only has one top 10 wrestler registered. Two-time NCAA qualifier and likely top seed Josh Alber is going to have his hands full with the unattached duo of Kaden Gfeller and Nick Lee.

Gfeller is a crafty yet powerful 141-pounder who’s been training lately with the likes of Dean Heil and about half a dozen All-American-caliber 149-pounders that Oklahoma State has in the room. Nick Lee is still a true freshman but spent his senior year in high school training with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, so he’s been preparing against DI-caliber competition for over a year.

Luke Karam and Russell Rohlfing have both proven themselves capable of handling top 20 talent this year, whereas Jared Prince is a welcome addition to the bracket, as the Midshipman has been absent from competition so far this year. Prince’s teammate Nic Gil has been filling in admirably so far this season, but it was Prince who held down a top 20 ranking for most of last season while advancing as far as the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

Highly touted Virginia frosh Brian Courtney will be competing with his redshirt intact, while Jared Cortez will be wrestling varsity in the same bracket as his redshirted teammate Nick Lee for the first time this season. Kyle Shoop, an NCAA qualifier last season, rounds out a contenders list in a bracket that is as wide open as any at the Scuffle this year. Expect most picks to go horribly wrong.

Predictions

Spey’s Picks: 1) Nick Lee 2) Jared Prince 3) Josh Alber 4) Kaden Gfeller

Nomad's Picks: 1) Josh Alber 2) Kaden Gfeller 3) Nick Lee 4) Jared Prince

Willie's Picks: 1) Josh Alber 2) Kaden Gfeller 3) Nick Lee 4) Jared Prince

Prince tempting Fate as I type this.
“The immortal gods are wont to allow those persons whom they wish to punish for their guilt sometimes a greater prosperity and longer impunity, in order that they may suffer the more severely from a reverse of circumstances.” - Gaius Julius, aka Caesar

133 #1 seed S. Parker (Leh) DEC Trybus (NAVY) 6-1 - Plebe Trybus faced the #1 and #2 seeds in his only two matches (what are the odds on that?!) - he wrestled both of them tough!!

NAVY also out at 197 as Roetman loses in consolations.

With one round of Consolations left tonight NAVY is 3rd one point ahead of Lehigh behind PSU and UNI. Both NAVY and Lehigh alive in 8 weights.

Happens more often than you might think.

If you wrestle either of them in the first round and the other loses in the second or vice versa with the rounds...
