Hello Friends and Family,
For those that have not heard, our athletic department has just received it's largest donation ever by a single donor. Dr. Bai Lee's generous gift will support facility enhancements to the student-success center, strength and conditioning facility and sports medicine. These three areas are integral to our athletes overall athletic and academic success at Binghamton University. We cannot thank Dr. Lee enough for helping Binghamton University athletics continue to grow and provide our athletes with state-of-the art facilities and resources.
I would also like to welcome our two big recruits the Kulas brothers, Kyan and Kalan!
Kyan (3) and Kalen (5) were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 between the ages of 1 and 2. SMA is an incurable, degenerative neuromuscular disease that causes muscle weakness, limited mobility, and atrophy. Motor nerves arise from the spinal cord and control the muscles that are used for activities such as breathing, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. In January 2015, both brothers started a clinical trial, ISIS SMNRx, which returns protein production back to normal levels. Remarkably, the trial has been effective for both boys and slowed their disease progression! They both complete physical and occupational therapy 3-4 times weekly as well as therapeutic horseback riding to develop core strength. Both boys are in power wheelchairs, but can do amazing things on the parallel bars! The team has been training hard all summer to prepare for the 2015-2016 season, and will use the motivation provided by the Kulas brothers to make it a big success!
