Friday Night Meet the Mids

NAVY and Maryland will clash at Alumni Hall Friday night at 7:30 pm.

Jan. 10, 2018

Fresh off a 26-10 victory over EIWA member Bucknell last Sunday, the NAVY wrestling team (4-0, 2-0 EIWA) will look to keep its unbeaten streak intact with a pair of duals this weekend. The Mids welcome in-state rival Maryland (3-6, 0-6 Big Ten) to Alumni Hall in Annapolis on Friday for a 7:30 pm match before traveling to Bethlehem, Pa. to battle sixth-ranked Lehigh (6-1, 4-0 EIWA) Sunday at Grace Hall beginning at 2:00 pm. A free live video stream will be available for both matches by logging on to NavySports.com(.)

Admission for Friday’s home match against Maryland is $10 for adults and $3 for youth (18 & under). A reminder that vehicular access to the Naval Academy is limited to those drivers with a Department of Defense identification card. It is suggested that fans park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ($5 per vehicle) and ride the FREE shuttle bus to and from the tournament. Note that a government issued identification card must be carried and presented by visitors to the USNA prior to being allowed onto The Yard.

Meet the Mids and More
• The first 250 fans in attendance to the Maryland match will receive a free takedown foam finger
• It’s Youth Night with kids 18 and under receiving a special $3 ticket
• Following the conclusion of Friday night’s match, Navy will hold its annual Meet the Mids autograph session on the concourse.

NAVY Notebook
• NAVY enters the weekend with a 4-0 dual record, including a 2-0 mark in EIWA matches. The Mids have twice beaten Delaware Valley (46-3 and 49-0), defeated Drexel, 22-13, and beat Bucknell, 26-10.
• Meeting in dual action for the first time since 2009, the Mids dealt Bucknell a 26-10 loss last Sunday in Annapolis after the Mids won seven matches, including two bonus point bouts.
• Seven wrestlers have reached double-digit wins this season, including junior 141-pound Nicholas Gil (Crystal Lake, Ill.) who will be looking for what would be a team-best 20th victory this weekend. Senior 184-pound Michael Coleman (Hudson, Ohio) has 18 wins, followed by 157-pound Zack Davis (Granger, Ind.) (17), 149-pound Corey Wilding (Pittsburgh, Pa.) (16), 174-pound Jadaen Bernstein (Glen Gardner, N.J.) (15), 165-pound Drew Daniels (Overland Park, Kan.) (14) and heavyweight Austin Faunce (Lake Oswego, Ore.) (11).
• Five Navy wrestlers are among the national rankings (InterMat) this week - Gil at 141 (#18), Prince at 149 (#19), Daniels at 165 (#20), Bernstein at 174 (#8) and Coleman at 184 (#18).
• Following a 3-1 performance at the Southern Scuffle, Bernstein pushed his career record to 104-40. He currently stands 12th on NAVY’s career wins list, trailing 11th-place Ed Prendergast (2005-08) by just two. Meanwhile, he is four wins shy of joining NAVY’s all-time top 10 list. He is also ranked among the top 15 in career matches wrestled with 144. It’s the ninth most in program history. Bernstein is 2-0 in dual action this season and stands 23-4 in dual matches over his career.
• Davis continues his quest in joining Bernstein on the 100 wins list. With a 93-48 career mark, he stands 18th on NAVY’s all-time wins leader board. He trails 17th-place Frank Shaffer (1980-83) by just two wins and needs seven to become just the 15th wrestler in school history to reach the 100-win milestone.
• Davis is also approaching the Mids’ all-time leader board for pins. He has 18 to date over his career, needing to reach 23 to be ranked among the top 15.
• After missing the first two months of action due to an injury, Jared Prince (Safety Harbor, Fla.) made his debut a week ago at the Southern Scuffle. The 2017 NCAA qualifier put together a 5-1 record and placed third at 149 pounds, a weight class up from a year ago.

Maybe it's just Alford and a few of the Lehigh crew, but that sort of thing seems to be happening a lot lately. The days of running out the clock on an early five-point lead are over.

BTW, Navy's got six wrestlers in the Hitchcock field today, including Prince and Hovis: https://arena.flowrestling.org/event/9b ... cfe09a38e8

Wrapping up something of an unusual day for the EIWA, Harvard just won over Stanford, 21-20. The match ended 20-20, with each team winning five bouts with one fall. Stanford's twitter feed says the dual came down to Criteria d, most total near fall points scored only in decisions, MDs, and TFs.
