11/15/15 Sooners 3-0 at NE/Journeymen Duals

NORMAN – The No. 20 University of Oklahoma wrestling team began the 2015-16 season in dominating fashion, tallying three dual victories against Nassau Community College, Rutgers and Army at the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals. The event was held at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y.

The Sooners registered seven wins by fall and five technical falls in the contests. OU Head Coach Mark Cody said he was excited to finally see his team in action.

“I am very encouraged about what happened today,” Cody said. “We have a lot of work to do, and as a staff we are excited because what we need to work on becomes clearer to us after competition.”

OU started the day with a 51-0 shutout of Nassau Community College. Four Sooners tallied falls in the dual, beginning at 141 with sophomore Trae Blackwell’s pin against Sean Miller in 2:31. In his collegiate debut, freshman Davion Jeffries pinned Colin Hopkins in 1:23 at 149 pounds and redshirt junior Brad Johnson won by fall in 3:33 over Andy Rodriguez at 197. Redshirt junior heavyweight Ross Larson put an exclamation mark on the match, registering a win by fall in 2:35 over Jenard Rosemond,

Redshirt senior and 2015 133-pound national champion Cody Brewer made quick work of NCC’s Chris Meloni, winning 16-1 by technical fall in 3:00. Brock Wingbermuehle also registered a tech. fall, downing Mike Dusold, 18-1, in 3:00. Matt Reed defeated Ralph Canzetta by technical fall, 20-5, in 3:09.

In the second dual of the day, the Sooners defeated Rutgers 19-18 in a back-and-forth contest. Brewer earned the Sooners’ first points at 133 pounds with a win by fall over No. 19-ranked Anthony Giraldo in 2:42, and redshirt junior Brad Johnson secured a 14-6 major decision over Hayden Hrymack in the 197-pound bout. At 165 pounds, No. 11 Clark Glass defeated No. 9 Anthony Perotti by 7-6 decision. Jeffries and Reed also recorded wins in the dual. Jeffries defeated Tyson Dippery in a 9-2 decision, while Reed registered a 7-6 decision of Phil Bakuckas.

The Sooners cruised to a 34-6 win over Army in the final dual of the day, picking up eight wins in the contest. Sophomore Ryan Millhof defeated Sean Badua in the 125-pound matchup with an 18-3 technical fall in 4:25. Brewer followed suit with an 18-2 tech. fall over Justin Seim in 2:48. Jeffries picked up his second fall of the day, this one coming in 2:34 over Javier Rodriguez. Glass won by decision, 13-6, over Andrew Mendel, and Reed defeated Brian Harvey in a 6-2 decision. Freshman Joel Dixon recorded a fall over Samson Imonodoe in 4:28 at 184 pounds, and Brad Johnson downed No. 19 Bryce Barnes at 197 in a 3-2 decision. OU redshirt senior Mike Brown ended the day with a 5-2 decision over Trevor Smith.

The Sooners return to Norman for their home and Big 12 opener on Thursday, Nov. 19, when they face Northern Colorado. The dual is slated for 7 p.m. inside McCasland Field House.
