Retherford Makes Senior World Team/Hall Junior World Team

Postby nittanykid » Mon Jun 12, 2017 12:51 am

Showing true grit and moxie, college junior Zain Retherford not only battled his way through a tough challenge tournament, but also beat Olympic 5th place finisher and fellow Nittany Lion Frank Molinaro in a tough best of three finals to make his first senior world team. The two time undefeated NCAA champion and Hodge trophy winner is no stranger to freestyle wrestling, winning a world cadet gold medal while in high school, but this will be his first time competing on the big stage at the senior world championships later this summer in Paris, France. Fellow Penn State wrestlers David Taylor and Jason Nolf also placed at the World Team Trials in Lincoln, Nebraska, but came up just short of making the world team. David Taylor fell to last year's Olympic bronze medalist J'Den Cox in the best of three finals to take runner up. After defeating Cox handily in the first match, 9-3, Taylor was unable to secure a victory in the final two matches, giving up a late score in the second match, and couldn't come up with a takedown in the rubber match, eventually losing, 5-3. Jason Nolf lost a close match to Jimmy Kennedy in the semifinals of the challenge tournament, 8-6, but came back to place third. Nico Megaludis also make it to the semifinals of the challenge tournament, before losing to eventual champion, Thomas Gilman.

Although only one Penn Stater made the starting team, four Nittany Lion wrestlers will be part of the world team: Zain Retherford (starter), David Taylor (alternate), Frank Molinaro (alternate), and Jason Nolf (third). Joining Retherford on a world team will be freshman NCAA champion Mark Hall, who made the Junior World Team over the weekend. The two time world gold medalist will try to win his third title later this year.
