So the news about Brooks was a long expected gut punch. I was kinda holding out hope that we would land him as the rebirth of a the program. Still no good news out of this program, nothing on recruits, nothing about a coaching change, and no wins on the mat. Maryland, why you gotta make it so hard to like you?

Had a chance to watch Minnesota and Maryland on Big Ten network today adn was pretty uninspired by Maryland Diehl had a great win, but everyone else looked tired, beaten. Ugalde looked like he was not interested in his match, and gave up the pin. Whistler wrestled well, but seemed to not know that a take down in the last 30 seconds could give MD a chance to tie with Hermida getting a pin at heavyweight. He seemed to be content with his decision. Of course it was all moot as Hermida put on a pretty sleepy performance as well, only taking a committed shot in overtime. Glad the Big 10 season is over.

I also watched on TV. I used to go to most of the home matches, but they are so depressing. What I found astounding was the nearly empty gym. I guess I'm not the only one. I didn't see (or hear) Ficker so it wasn't all bad.

Two crows, that was my takeaway too. Almost an empty gym and a traditional power is in town for a match. It's depressing seeing places like Rutgers pack their gym for basically every match (I give them much credit). I really believe if we started winning or competing at a much higher level that the fan support would be there. I've gone to many ACC's tournaments over the years and I never saw as many fans in attendance as the last year it was in college park (around 2012). We have 1 big ten win in 4 seasons so it'[s understandable. I wonder how many guys we can get to NCAA's this year. Big tens are 3 weeks away.

Even if we were still in the ACC, we'd be ranked last. According to FLo, the only B10 team ranked below us (based on NCAA points) is Michigan State. Flo B10 rankings for UMD wrestlers as of 1/25/18:

Wt Rank Name
125 12 Cray
133 14 Simmons
141 12 Diehl
149 9 Bannister
157 13 Cochran
165 11 Bernham
174 13 Jones
184 14 Capello
197 12 Whisler
285 5 Hemida

Until they're registered for the tournament, we can't be sure of the roster. We might get 2 to the NCAA tournament, possibly 3 if some wrestlers (Diehl?)rise to the equation. More disappointing even than the losses is the low energy level on display in many of the matches. The excitement of the tournament may be a motivator.

Based on that we'll likely only have two.....Hemida and Bannister though I wouldn't be surprised if someone else snuck in there a well. Regardless, not where we want to be as a program. There isn't much more than can be said that hasn't already been stated repeatedly on these forums.
